A study of full-time employees in Britain revealed that female workers take more days off from work due to illness than do male workers. The same study also revealed that female workers are more likely than male workers to go into work when they are sick.

Type- inference

(A) Many illnesses are more common in women than in men. - Out of scope
(B) Female workers are absent from work more often due to childbearing and related medical conditions. - Out of scope - the argument does not provide any such information
(C) Both male and female workers sometimes call in sick when they are actually healthy. - Incorrect - while this may be true in real life, the argument does not provide such information
(D) Female workers in Britain are sick on more days of the year than are male workers in Britain. - Correct
(E) Having sick people in the workplace spreads illness. - Out of scope

Answer D

1. In Britain, female workers take more days off from work due to illness than do male workers --> 1A. Female workers in Britain are sick on more days of the year than are male workers in Britain
1B. In Britain, female workers are more likely than male workers to go into work when they are sick.
1A can be inferred from 1 since statement 1 explicitly mentions taking off due to illness.
1B acts as a strengthener for 1A since it reinforces the fact that the number of days on which female workers are sick is more than the number of sick leave taken by them.

2. In Britain, female workers take more sick leaves than do male workers --> 2A. female workers in Britain are sick on more days of the year than are male workers in Britain
2B. In Britain, female workers are more likely than male workers to go into work when they are sick.
2C. In Britain, female workers are more likely to be sick when they take sick leave than male workers are.

I don't think 2A can be inferred from 2 because people might take sick leaves even when they aren't actually sick.
But, if we combine 2 and 2C, then we can infer 2A?
Does 2B have any effect on statement 2A?

Hi Skywalker18,

2A and 2C cannot be inferred just from 2. We don't know whether people (whether male or female) are actually sick when they take sick leave. So 2A and 2C cannot be inferred. However, when 2 and 2B are combined, we can conclude that 2A is true (but not necessarily 2C).

Hope that helps! :)

The stem includes this bit:

A study of full-time employees in Britain revealed that female workers take more days off from work due to illness than do male workers.

I think you may be reading this as the given reason, whereas the question is trying to present it (illness) as the actual reason.

Hi AjiteshArun sir,
I think you might have missed my statement 1 and its related statement that discuss actual illness as given in this question.
I was contemplating the implications of changing statement 1 to statement 2 -" female workers take more sick leaves than do male workers". I think this fact is same as the given reason as stated by you.
Whereas, statement 1 and in this question, we are given the ACTUAL reason.

In both sets of statements, my objective was to find out whether statement 1A or 2A can be inferred using the other statement(s).

Q1-In my opinion, we need 2, 2B and 2C to infer 2A?

Q2- 1B acts as a strengthener for 1A since it reinforces the fact that the number of days on which female workers are sick is more than the number of sick leave taken by them?
