A study published in the British Medical Journal showed that women who ate nuts more than five times a week were about one third less likely to suffer from coronary heart disease as those who ate no nuts at all.

a) as those who ate

b) as women who ate

c) as those eating

d) than women eating

e) than were those who ate

Answer to follow...

It is comparing...so "than" should be used...
Out of D and E,,

the verb in E makes sense..

Need less likely...than, so A and B are out.
C and D are out for verb tense inconsistency (eating)
So E by POE

agree with logic above

between D and E- 'who ate' is the key for E

cheers

E....

all the above comments for E + parallelism... ...that women who ate nuts more than five times a week were....than were those...

yes - you right

although- the on the way to broke this question dont need that

simply- its comparison question- ' more than'....'likely' which gives you D or E.

and then between D and E- you see parallelism for 'who ate'

so E

To answer this question, look at non underlined part 'less' :-A study published in the British Medical Journal showed that women who ate nuts more than five times a week were about one third less likely to suffer from coronary heart disease

Less than is idiom : so between D and E

E is better since women who ate nuts less than women who ate (will be right comparison)

Hope this helps:)

This is a comparison question and here we have used more.
More is used with than and hence options A,B and C go out.
Option D is incorrect because it does not maintain parallelism.
Women who ate not|| to women eating and hence ruled out.

Option E maintains parallelism and also uses the correct idiom and hence is correct.

Henc IMO (E) due to correct idiom less X than Y and Parallalism....
