A ten year comparison between the US and the Soviet Union in terms of crop yields per acre revealed that when only planted acreage is compared, Soviet yields are equal to 68 percent of US yields. When total agricultural acreage (planted acreage plus fallow acreage) is compared, Soviet yield is however 114 percent of US yield.
From above which can be infered:
A. A higher percentage of total agricultural acreage was fallow in US than in the Soviet Union.
B. The US had more fallow acreage than planted acreage
C. Fewer total acres of available agricultural land were fallow in Soviet Union than in the US.
D. The Soviet Union had more planted acreage than fallow acreage.
E. The Soviet Union produced a greater volume of crops than the US produced

(E) it is, rest all cannot be infered.

(A) is wrong, assumes Planted crop in US =100
In USSR = 68.

Total acreage in US = 200 (say)
In USSR = 228

Hence Fallow in US = 100, in USSR = 160
So Fallow percentage in USSR is higher than US

mba, you misunderstood the question

100 and 68 refer to crop yields PER ACRE (OF PLANTED GROUND) not the total crop yield

Your example is invalid. I am 90% sure the answer is A, if I'm right I will explain

I will give counter-examples to choiced B,C,D, and E

Example 1:

US:
planted acreage(PA)=100
fallow acreage(FA)=100
total acreage(TA)=200
crop per acre of PA = 100
crop per acre of TA = 50
total crop = 100*100 = 200*50 = 10000

USSR:
PA=10
FA=1.93
TA=11.93
crop per acre of PA = 68 [= 68% of US crop per acre of PA]
crop per acre of TA = 57 [= 114% of crop per acre of TA]
total crop = 10*68 = 11.93*57 = 680

This example eliminates choices B and E

Example 2:

US:
planted acreage(PA)=10
fallow acreage(FA)=23.53
total acreage(TA)=33.53
crop per acre of PA = 100
crop per acre of TA = 29.82
total crop = 10*100 = 33.53*29.82 = 1000

USSR:
PA=100
FA=100
TA=200
crop per acre of PA = 68 [= 68% of US crop per acre of PA]
crop per acre of TA = 34 [= 114% of crop per acre of TA]
total crop = 100*68 = 200*34 = 6800

This example eliminates choices C and D

I'm with A
US planted acreage: 100
Soviet planted acreage: 100
US crop yield: 100%
Soviet crop yield: 68%
Total acreage in US(planted+fallow): 200
Total acreage in Soviet(planted+fallow): 120
Total yield US: 100/200 = 50%
Total yield Soviet: 68/120 = 57%
Total Soviet/US yield: 57/50 = 114%
Beware when you are comparing % vs quantity. E is a trap because it uses quantity while the problem is only about percentages.
