5. A weapons-smuggling incident recently took place in country Y. We all know that Y is a closed society. So YтАЩs government must have known about the weapons.
Which of the following is an assumption that would make the conclusion above logically correct?
(A) If a government knows about a particular weapons-smuggling incident, it must have intended to use the weapons for its own purposes.
(B) If a government claims that it knew nothing about a particular weapons-smuggling incident, it must have known everything about it.
(C) If a government does not permit weapons to enter a country, it is a closed society.
(D) If a country is a closed society, its government has a large contingent of armed guards patrolling its borders.
(E) If a country is a closed society, its government has knowledge about everything that occurs in the country.

E since it ties a closed society directly with the govt. knowing all about the goings on within the society.

E too :)

We all know that Y is a closed society.
So YтАЩs government must have known about the weapons.
We need to make the link between those two sentences...

A and B are irrelevant
Only C and D could also be interesting but :

(C) If a government does not permit weapons to enter a country, it is a closed society. -> this assumption is too deep. You can not go so far with the information you only have now. Moreover this sentence is different from the stem. X -> Y doesn't mean that Y -> X in all cases.
(D) If a country is a closed society, its government has a large contingent of armed guards patrolling its borders. -> There is nothing in the text that could let you think this. Just stick to the stem

I believe E is corret.

Evidence1: Weapons Incident
Evidence2: Y is a close society

Assumption: If Y is closed society, then it knows everything

Conclusion: Therefore, Y must have konw about the weapons.

The great thing about assumption CRs is that if you negate the answer choice and the argument falls apart, then you have the right answer. If E weren`t true then the nothing would make sense.

Absolutely E.

Though it completely makes sense to have Answer 'E'. But 'E' Option says - Have COMPLETE knowledge of whats going on with in the country. Isn't it too Extreme?

Would anyone want to explain this?

Conclusion itself is very extreme because it says government MUST HAVE known.

Just imagine a single loop-hole that government would be unaware of, then we cannot conclude that government MUST HAVE known about smuggling.

so extreme is not ALWAYS wrong.
