A wooden rod is cut into two pieces. What is the length of the longer piece?
Let the length of the shorter and longer pieces be x and y, respectively.
(1) One of the pieces is 20 inches longer than the other piece --> x + 20 = y. Not sufficient.
(2) The length of the shorter piece is \(\frac{1}{3}\) the length of the longer piece --> x = y/3. Not sufficient.
(1)+(2) We have two distinct linear equations with two unknowns, hence we can solve for both. Sufficient.
Answer: C.
