mikemcgarry Can you please comment on below question w.r.t "capability" and "ability" in option D and E. The question is picked from GMATPrep software.

D. Due to their capability to reproduce several times yearly and to produce large numbers of offspring, many insect species
E. Due to their ability of reproducing several times yearly and to produce offspring of large numbers, many insect species
Dear
Keats,
I'm happy to respond.
This is a great question, and as I am sure you appreciate, (A) is the OA. Choice (D) & (E) have multiple problems. Both of them commit the "
due to" mistake; for an explanation, see:
GMAT Sentence Correction: the “Due To” MistakeBoth (D) & (E) are flagrantly guilty of this mistake.
Choice (E) definitely has an idiom mistake as well. The words "
able" and "
ability" always idiomatically take the infinitive; thus, "
ability of reproducing" is idiomatically wrong and "
ability to reproduce" would be correct. The idiom for "
capable" and "
capability" is bit more flexible, but it sounds unnatural to use an infinitive with either; thus, "
capable to reproduce" is idiomatically off--it doesn't sound right at all: the most common idiom is "
capable of."
If (D) and (E) did not have a "
due to" error and did not have idiom errors, then either would be capable of being correct.
Does this make sense?
