The only criticism that I’d raise was one from my fiancée who mentioned that the JV career panel was not as helpful as it could have been. Her two take aways from that particular panel were to file for unemployment and that the best job resource was a local nanny organization. She’s got some specific concerns about employment in Chicago, so take that with a grain of salt, but it was something that she flagged.

My wife had the same opinion. She also found that the housing tour was a little lacking. I think more than anything though, she had a hard time swallowing the whole "JV" monicker (she was a division I varsity athlete) :P . Anyway, I definately think that there is an opportunity for incoming "partners" to take charge and make some changes next year. I will say though, overall, my wife had a really good time and made some really good friends. There are definately a lot of great opportunities for partners (KWEST, GIM, audit classes, clubs, etc).

As sad as it may seem the JV stuff supposedly much better than last year. I guess they got busses instead of walking all over evanston and they did the housing tour themselves instead of last year when it was run by realtors who really were only trying to show places they were attempting to sell. The career panel is a tough one too, my wife had the same issue last year since no one was remotedly related to her field. Honestly, the hardest thing about the JV thing is they really are doing it just because they love the community and try their best. Most of them are working fulltime and unlike current students this is not a resume building activity or something that benefits them at all.

I know several JV's who were busy or weren't asked, I think some of that was due to a very tight budget compared to the student portions and the number of prospective JVs was far higher than ever before, so they were afraid to bring in a bunch of volunteers and then not even be able to give them a lunch. I think the thing with the panel is they tried to find people in a variety of areas but focus on the ones more people are in. I believe a few of our friends who work in education or are nurses took part in it because those are the more common jobs and I know they were trying to get a couple of girls who work in HR to come. The JV's I know come from a huge variety of fields, so its tough to get a a real representation when there are so many things that people do. I know wives who are engineers, corporate finance, unemployeed, lack visas, nannys, teachers, nurse practitioners, office managers, stay at home moms, advertising/marketing and various other professional positions.

Send me a pm with what your wife does and is looking for. I will pass it along to my wife and see if she knows anyone who actually does the same thing or is in the same industry. A personal connection will be a lot better than a short career panel aimed at a room of 60+ people doing god knows what.

If you have housing questions I think myself, steel, and mgoblue2 all live in different buildings. I have gone to tons of different apartments and have a pretty good idea what a lot are like from hanging out at my friends places. If you have specific questions/requirements just ask and we probably can point you to some good places. Budget probably is the biggest factor too.

To all prospective students that didn't get a chance to go to DAK, I think this post captures the true "spirit" of the Kellogg community better than anything I could write. There is just this overwealming sense of "if something isn't working or could be done better, let's take the initiative to make it so." No wonder recruiters think so highly of Kellogg grads!!

We may have met after all - I remember talking to someone at the Saturday evening event who told me their wife was an athlete and didn't like the JV title...

Anyone coming with a dog? River - it seems the only places I could find that accomodate dogs are 1501 Maple/Grove and the reserve. Both look really nice but are a little farther from campus than I would like. Do you have any idea what people with dogs are doing? How about the private houses on Foster or in that area? Do people live there? Are they really expensive?

Thanks!

On another note - Evanston is a lovely city - kinda cold (though I heard we had a particularly warm weekend), but very welcoming.
I was in Chicago/Evanston this weekend for a visit and interview at Kellogg. I believe that "particularly warm" is an understatement. I think it was about 30 degrees (Fahrenheit) warmer than normal on Saturday!

For those admitted as MMMs, we are slated to take Turbo Finance. From what I understand this basically is two finance classes crammed together as one. For someone like myself, who has never taken a finance class other than Finance for Engineers, is there any value in forfeiting an elective in order to take finance 1 and 2, especially if I have an interest in strategy consulting or in house corporate strategy?

Hey everyone! Wanted to introduce myself - was accepted into Kellogg yesterday. Absolutely psyched - I feel an intensely strong fit with the program. I read through the thread, and the Kellogg culture is clearly evident. Really impressed by the extent to which everyone has been helping each other out. Very excited and can't wait for DAK II. Wish I could have met you all during DAK I.

Not sure if there's a true benefit. However, one of our PiggyBanks group leaders did say that one thing he regretted was not taking both fin 1 and fin 2 because fin 2 isn't covered as in depth in turbo finance and it's something he wishes he could have learned better.
My assumption is that MMMs who go into finance end up taking both fin1 and fin2 (to get a more thorough understanding), does that sound reasonable? Just a guess on my part.

You dont have to do turbo, I have a few MMM friends who are doing Fin 1 and Fin 2. I am not a MMM but am an engineer and decided to go with Fin 1 and Fin 2 instead of turbo. To me turbo seems more mechanical if you dont have a background, you really dont have the time to absorb the info. That said the first half of Fin 1 is a cake walk if you have a decent math background. In my opinion I found that accounting and DECS are helpful during FIN, so having those done before you go into Fin make life easier.

I took marketing in the fall since though it might be surprising Marketing has a MUCH higher work load than Fin. You have to do lots of reading for cases and the homework/group work is much greater in volume. Taking Fin 1 in the winter is pretty nice if you are recruiting heavily.

Hey soni,

Any idea how many MMMs were there in total at DAK I? I am an R2 applicant for MMM and was trying to guage the # of MMMs accepted in R1, since its only a cohort of 60 odd. I had attended the MMM Prospective weekend back in October last year and almost 90% of the 80 odd prospective students at that event were R1s, with only a handful of us who were thinking of R2.

--thanks

Um, I'm trying to think about this. The only times I think we were all together in one place was for the pizza dinner and the breakout lunch. I'm trying to think about how many were around the table at the pizza joint (not including spouses and current students). I'm thinking maybe 20 max. Soni, does that sound about right to you?
