Well,

My wife and I arrived in Evanston last night. Gorgeous place. Much colder than we're used to:) The Hilton Garden Inn is a very nice hotel and the students I've already met have been amazingly nice.

Can't wait to get things rolling:)

Anyone staying at the Hilton? We can PM room numbers and meet for a drink.

Gil

Glad you're enjoying it Gil. Make sure to visit downtown/Magnificent Mile area if you haven't been to Chicago before.

I'll be getting there tonight around 8pm. I'm staying at Best western, a block or so away from Tommy Nevins. I put my name on the PM list we were passing around. I'll def say hi if I see you tonight or over the weekend.

Have a good trip! Really curious to see the face behind the nick:)

Gil is my real name and I am betting I will be the only Gil in the class of 2011 so you guys will have an easy time figuring out who I am.

I was too busy with midterms to do anything fun with the DAK people other than get a free dinner Friday night. DAK leaders seriously are gold this year. DAK took place during midterms and peak recruiting, so I have friends who were working on DAK when the rest of us were studying or doing take home tests. The people at dinner seemed to be having a lot of fun and were surprised how busy they were kept during the day. No clue how the rest of the weekend went though since that was after only day 1. People were definitely having a blast at the bar when I took off Friday night.

I had a great time.

We spent the first night (thursday) at a local bar and met the early arrivers and some of the DAK group leaders. It was a good way to get to know a few people right from the beginning. It seemed there was a good mixture of people who knew they were going to Kellogg and people who were debating.

During DAK we were divided into groups based on "little versions" of the sections the classes are usually divided into (I was a puppy - symbolizing the big dogs). We had four group leaders who were amazing (one of them has to be the funniest guy I have ever met). Throughout the two days we had a good mixture of lectures/discussion groups (clubs, courses, dean, etc.), bonding activities (scavenger hunt, lunch, games) and informational events (KWEST, clubs). We also had a dinner and went a club called the Keg (which I am way too old for:)). I broke down around 11 but some people partied all night.

Closing ceremonies were in Chicago. Took us to a very cool place where there were cocktails and mingling and most people continued to a nice Chicago location later. I had to leave early, so I went back to Evanston after the events.

I had a great time - and for the first time I was able to understand the true differences between Kellogg and some other schools. I definitely got the feeling that Kellogg is like an all you can eat restaraunt. There is an enormous abundance of everything - education, fun, experience, networking - you just need to decide how much of everything you need to put on your plate.

On another note - Evanston is a lovely city - kinda cold (though I heard we had a particularly warm weekend), but very welcoming. Like everything else in Kellogg, there is a variety of housing options and you can go from dirt cheap to really high end depending on your personal budget. If you do not have a pet, I would definitely recommend checking out Mcmanus (dorm) which seems to offer the best value for money I could find in Evanston.

Finally, I can't begin to thank all the first and second year students who were incredibly welcoming. What really impressed me was how much each and every person I spoke with loves Kellogg. Either everyone is really happy or they did a great job hiding those who aren't:)

Also met some awesome GMATclub people. I won't write down names for privacy issues, but we have a couple of great people here. I really hope they all decide to join me at Kellogg next year.

Thats about it from me...

Let me echo Gil in first saying what an amazing job the students did putting on a tremendous weekend (especially considering most were taking mid-terms).

I won't recant all of the things that Gil already mentioned, but I will hit on a couple of other things that really made me believe that Kellogg is a special place. First, on Friday morning, Dean Dipak Jain spoke to the entire group for about an hour. Talk about a humble, smart and engaging leader. Truly a gifted man. What stikes me most looking back now, is that everyone at Kellogg, from the dean on down is all on the same page. By this I mean, the message that he gave was reiterated in actions everywhere I looked. One notable example: On Saturday afternoon, we had two career breakout sessions in which the different student clubs held Q&A panels. I went to Strategy and Business Development and Consulting. What struck me about the consulting club was how available the second year students make themselves to help the first years land internships. There is this palpable feeling of, "when I was a first year, the seconds years helped me achieve my goals, and now I am doing the same."

Perhaps what sold me more than anything else, was all of the amazing prospective students/potential classmates (and their significant others) I met over the weekend. I mean just cool, unpretentious, smart people (maverick and soni to name a couple). As things were wrapping up on Saturday, I literally found myself looking around the room and hoping that the folks I met would pass up there admits to Tuck (maverick) and Booth (soni) to attend Kellogg in the fall.

As I sit here, I am finding it very difficult to capture exactly how much fun this experience was in words. For those that weren't able to attend, my closing comment is this: be prepared to be a leader. Kellogg is literally 99% student run. You will get a fantastic business education. You will have access to all of the top companies and firms in the world. But, you will have to work for it. Whether leading a KWEST trip to Norway, or serving on the DAK executive committee, you will be involved. Its part of what makes Kellogg so special.

maverick and soni, I know I am missing some things here, so please feel free to add comments.

I hear that a lot. He is from a very humble background; about 25 years ago, he was a math teacher in a remote town in North East India.

Nice post!

Domtri33 and Gil captured a lot of this weekend and I would agree with what they wrote. Overall it was an incredible weekend. I think the first thing that struck me was how down to earth and friendly everybody was - the deans and administration, the faculty, the DAK leaders and the other admitted students. I know that this is one of the characteristics that Kellogg is known for, but to see it in a group of almost 300 people was quite impressive. I had a lot of fun getting to know a lot of great people (including Gil, maverick2011 and soni) over the 3 days I was there and, like domtri and Gil, I hope they all come back in the fall.

Another thing was that the weekend didn't feel as much like a sales drive as I thought it would be. Of course there were plenty of times where students, faculty and admin said that they really hoped we came to Kellogg. But everyone also was candid about the great opportunities and strengths that other schools have and overall the message came across more like "this is what we think about Kellogg and this is why we love being here" rather than "this is why Kellogg is better than school X and so you should come here." And let me tell you, it was very apparent that all the current students I met love being at Kellogg.

A few other random observations: current students strongly suggested that people go on a KWEST trip - all of the current students I met had done one and they all said some of their closest friends are people they met on KWEST. There are a ton of options for housing from buildings that are almost all Kellogg students to random condos people found on Craigslist. From what the current students said, even for people who are going to DAK II there will still be plenty of available apartments since most people from DAK I won't sign leases until the spring. Evanston is much nicer than I expected - until this weekend I had never really seen much of it beyond the campus but there is a nice downtown area with restaurants, shopping etc.

Even though I knew I was going to go to Kellogg before this weekend, I am much more confident in that decision because of DAK. Of course, like any other top school the education will be world class. But what did it for me was how much fun it was spending time with the other students whether in the classroom, at meals or at the bar. An alumnus my group met with summed it up by saying that you won't just be in a network with other alumni, you will be lifelong friends with other alumni. I don't think the Kellogg culture is something that everyone wants for their bschool experience, but it is what I was looking for.

I totally agree with doing KWEST. My recommendation, pick a trip that is something you would otherwise never do. There are trips that go to extremely exotic places and do really cool things. You can go to a beach anytime in your life, but when are you going to hike to Machu Picchu, ride horses in the Andes, ski in the summer...heck last year the mystery trip was an RV trip around New Zealand. Our friends who didnt do KWEST definitely regret skipping it. If you are married, engaged, or whatever...definitely bring your significant other along.

As for places, right now I think some of the individuals trying to rent on the website are 2nd years looking to rent condos they purchased. They are asking far more than what we are paying in the same building, it looks like they are trying to get people to jump early out of fear of not finding a place and are asking probably what their mortgages are. I mean there are people looking for 2400-2600 for the same size units in buildings where people this year are paying 1700-2100. A lot more things will show up on the admitted students' messageboard. My advice dont rush to get anything right now. I would say keep your eyes open and try to pick your ideal place right before DAK 2.

Not much I can really add here, other than to say that DAK really did blow me away in terms of the atmosphere and organization of the event.

It was a pleasure meeting domtri33 (dom dom) and wife, Jerz, and maverick...not to mention the many other admits that I met over the weekend. Unfortunately, I didn't get to meet Gil, cs11, Steel, or RR.

One thing that really struck me over the weekend was when I ran into the president of the consulting club, whom I had met for an hour or so during my visit to Kellogg last spring, and he actually remembered me and chatted w/ me for a couple minutes. The "people" aspect of Kellogg is unsurpassed by any other school IMO.

No matter where I choose to attend next fall, it's good to know i have made some good friends in the Chi-town area.

I agree with soni, not much to add. But here are my thoughts (some of them redundant):

The whole DAK experience was amazing. They had stuff planned from morning until night both days. They split us into 8 sections, each led by a group of 4-5 first years, since there were so many people (around 250 I think). So some things we did with our section and some things with the whole group. On Thursday they had an informal get together at a local bar with our sections. On Friday, we had presentations from the dean of admissions, the dean of Kellogg, some “section time” (informal icebreakers/get to know everybody stuff), 2 different sessions for your area of interest (I went to the entrepreneurship and finance ones), a KWEST fair, the Friday happy hour and then they took us to a local restaurant in small groups. After that, most people went to a bar for most of the night. I ended up going to an after party with one of my section leaders.

Saturday was pretty much filled with the same type of stuff. They had a scavenger hunt (team building), 2 different career sessions (I went to Banking and Private Equity), some more presentations and an alumni panel. For the closing ceremony, they drove us down to Chicago where we had a banquet (pickups, beer, wine) at a really nice place and then they drove us to this really cool Chicago bar.

On Sunday, I went through a couple different housing options. There are a broad range of options where students live, from modern high rises to vintage houses depending on what you want to spend.

I agree with everyone's overall impressions of Kellogg. The students and fellow admits were all very personable and down to earth. Also, it was apparent that you get out of the program what you put into it. Since everything is student run, there are tons of opportunities to take on leadership roles. As for Evanston, I love how easy it is to just walk to the bars, housing and campus. It's also nice that Chicago is just a train ride away. It was great meeting soni, domtri, jerz, vijapp, cs11 (didn't realize it was him until after we met) and gil. I hate I didn't get to meet RR, steel and mgoblue2 in person.
