Jerz, the way you describe it is how I understood it too. That's why I was wondering about jb32's plan where you don't have to pay for Doctor's visits (or only a copayment). That would be ideal with a kid. Anyhow, guess it's time for more research...
Thanks guys, and thanks for the info on the scholarship river.
Well, Monk some (i.e. a lot of) plans cover 100% (with a $20 or $30 co-pay) of what insurance companies call 'Wellness Visits', i.e. physicals, immunizations, and regular checkups. Basically these are the kinds of things that children need a lot of and it makes sense to get a plan that has a copay and covers 100% of thse visits. I would say most insurance plans in the US do not charge much at all for regularly scheduled visits to your general physician. Of course this is dependent on your particular coverage, but a visit to a general physician for 'preventive maintenance' is pretty cheap. However, if you go to a hospital for care, you are looking at a pretty large bill. For instance with my plan at work, I pay a $20 co-pay to go see my general physician and everything is (usually) paid 100%. However, if I went to the ER for the same problems, I would probably be out $150+ (no copay and everything hits the deductible). All plans I've looked at so far are 100% for in-network wellness visits, and either 80% or 100% for coinsurance for urgent care and hosiptal visits. You can get 100% coverage, but its going to cost you about double.
