There should be info on the admitted student site about housing, which will help you see where the popular buildings are among students. In general, just about all students live within a box formed by Foster, Ridge, Lake and Hinman/Sheridan Rd, with the majority living in the southern half of that box (which is closer to the bars/restaurants in Evanston).

That's a pretty small box, hence probably not as many options in terms of the kind of housing I'm looking for. There's a place I like that's about 7 blocks south of Lake. Do you think it's really that big a deal to be a few blocks away? Are there that many last minute meetings that you need to be 2 min away from campus at a moment's notice?

The top MBA world is very small - many students come from a small set of "top" universities and employers before school. Strangely enough, I was connected via 2nd degree professional peers to classmates from 2 different continents.

There is a pretty wide variety of housing within that box. Some classmates live in houses to the north, and there is a mix of modern and vintage buildings to the south.

There are a ton of meetings at Kellogg, although most are planned in advance. To clarify, most of the popular buildings, although closer, are still around 10 min door-to-door to Jacobs.

Awesome, thanks. I noticed that some of the buildings are condos. What is the best method of securing one of these units for an August move-in date? Are they typically advertised on craigslist? How intense is the competition for a 1br?

Review the housing .xls file on the DAK website. Most, if not all, of the popular condos are represented. There should also be contact information for students currently living in those condos. Reach out to them. Everyone that I emailed responded within the same day. They should be able to put you in contact with the building manager/landlord. Also, there is plenty of housing information discussed during DAK. Most of the places that I looked at had July move in dates. However, because of the timing of the program, you're going to eat a month of rent on either end.

Thanks for the info. Where I'm coming from, your lease becomes month-to-month after the first year, and you're only required to give 60 days notice before you leave. Are you saying that you must renew for another full year after your first 12 months?

That's usually standard, but since most of these condos/apartments are rented by students, landlords are more stringent regarding this policy.

Congrats to all the admits on here! I for one am very excited about starting at Kellogg in the fall. My only concern, as many people have already voiced, is how to finance this 2 year program. I heard through the grapevine that some people may have found out about scholarships at the time they received their admittance. Is there any truth in this? If I did not hear about any scholarships already, is it likely that I will only receive around the average amount?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I remember reading somewhere (probably in the Kellogg applicants thread) that Kellogg provides some monetary assistance to attend DAK.. has anyone else heard about that or know what that process is? I didn't see anything listed on the DAK website. Thanks!

i'm interested in finding out if this is true as well...someone please let us know if you have heard this is true/false

Yes - they do pay for your flight to get there. I went to DAK 1. This is the email you will receive
;
Congratulations on your recent admission to Kellogg! On behalf of the Kellogg Office of Admissions, I am writing to invite you to some special activities during Day at Kellogg (DAK). The dates for the event are February 11-12, 2011. If you have not already done so, please register immediately for DAK via the welcome website. I noticed that several people who have booked travel have not registered for the event. If you have questions, you may contact the committee at dak11@kellogg.northwestern.edu. Don’t be left out!!!

Realizing you are in a crucial decision making stage, we would like to make sure that you have the opportunity to experience the Kellogg School: your airfare will be paid by Kellogg ($375 limit for US-based admits and $500 for internationally-based admits). If you have already booked your travel, please see the attached document for reimbursement instructions.

Black Management Association (BMA), Africa Business Club (ABC) and Hispanic Business Student Association (HBSA) will host a joint welcome reception on Thursday, February 10, beginning at 6:30pm. You will receive details and RSVP information on the club receptions shortly. We encourage you to arrive in Chicago no later than 4pm on February 10 for this special opportunity to meet and greet minority students and admits before DAK begins on Friday morning.

BOOKING TRAVEL
Contact Tina Erler at Travel 100 Group (800-245-9335) to make flight arrangements to and from Chicago. Hours of operation are 9:00 am – 5:00 pm CST, Monday through Friday. Flights must be booked no later than January 27th, 2011 to receive the travel stipend.

If your ticket costs more than the allotted stipend, you will not be able to use Travel 100 Group and will need to book your own ticket and submit your reservation for reimbursement with Kellogg. If your ticket falls under the allotted stipend amount and you DO book with Travel 100 Group, then the reimbursement instructions DO NOT apply to you.

All instructions are listed out carefully in the attached document. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact us. We are happy to serve as a resource.

Day at Kellogg is just around the corner and we are excited to see you on campus. Hope you can make it!.

Wow, you might have just saved me $500!

I have already booked my flight, so am I certain to get the reimbursement?

Thanks

Regarding flight reimbursement for DAK - I understood it was only offered to select students and they would make you aware whether you were one of these students at time of admittance and by sending the email referenced above. I could be wrong, but that is how I understood it.

I really hope so because I choose to not go to DAK because of travel cost, so I would have found that really annoying that they didn't tell about refunding the trip...

They don't reimburse everyone - as mentioned, it is selected students. I attended DAK 1 and there was no mention of a fee waiver via e-mail, or at any of the weekends activities.

for anyone that is booking a hotel during DAK, i just pricelined a 3.5 star @ $76 per night in Evanston/Skokie and I got the Hilton Orrington, the same hotel that Kellogg listed on the website for a reduced rate of $119 (the normal rate is $150 per night)... gotta love priceline!

Damn, I should have booked way earlier. I just tried to priceline the same thing and had no success even at $110/night. What other options are there?

I wound up getting the Holiday Inn Chicago North Shore, which looks like a dump, for $50/night. Well at least I know I won't be staying very long at the hotel with all the activities going on!
