How much did you score on official mocks?? & When are you going to post?? :( :(
Hi mr7eus,

Sorry for the delay. :(

I've put my initial debrief up, and I plan to write a more complete debrief soon. I'm also looking forward to reading more debriefs from other forum members. IIRC, the first Focus appointments at many of the centres in major Indian cities start only from the 8th of November.

Hi, The debrief would really help. Thank you in advance for that

Would help if you could answer a few more questions:

A) Was the Data Insight section hard to complete within the time frame?
B) What was your take on DI being computer-adaptive?
C) Was the verbal and quant different from typical GMAT questions? The recent mocks that I had taken seem to have more logical questions than technical ones with questions that were not anywhere in the Gmat club or other perp materials. Was that something that you noticed in the exam also?
Hi Sreejanair9633,

A. Yes, but other test takers may have a different experience. I was overconfident as I've always got 8 (with no mistakes) on IR, and I didn't take DI as seriously as I should have.

B. Can't say. The problem I face evaluating DI is that every now and then they'll present verbal-like questions (like fill in the two blanks with the most logical statements), and I find those questions very, very easy.

C. Verbal seems to be the same. Just keep in mind that I generally restrict myself to official questions, so if you've been solving nonofficial questions, you may have a different experience even with the same Focus Edition questions.

Approximately how many Data Sufficiency (DS) questions did you see in the Data Insights section?
Hi mcelroytutoring,

I got ~6 DS questions. I wanted to confirm this at the end, but there was no way to quickly navigate through my test using the review centre.

I just took the new GMAT Focus Edition.

I'll update this post a little later with a full debrief. In the meantime, please feel free to ask any questions you may have (particularly about the verbal section) here.

Hi AjiteshArun,

Thank you so much for sharing your debrief video! It helped answer many pressing questions and set expectations for D-Day. Have a list of DOs and DON'Ts lined up thanks to you.

Best,
Sim

Thank you for taking the tests and sharing your experience!

Did you get any new non-math related DS questions?
Hi bb,

Yes! One of them was quite long as well (but also quite simple).

By the way, I don't know whether these questions are experimental or not. I've told some test takers to guess through "verbal DS" questions if (only if) they absolutely have to, but that's a very risky strategy.

Hi Ajitesh,

Hope your test went well. I have below queries:

1. What was the difficulty level of CR in comparison to class edition GMAT or classic edition mocks?
Did you find the focus edition CR questions lengthier / more complex arguments / more complex options, etc.
Would really like to know your opinion on CR in focus edition.

2. How similar were the CR questions to focus edition mocks in terms of question types and more importantly, difficulty?

3. Has quant become more difficult than classic GMAT?
Any specific subsection such as NP / pnc, etc. with larger number of questions?

4. Please elaborate your take on comparative difficulty and similarity between IR and DI.
Also, any new type of graphs / questions in DI that is not seen before in IR or official questions / mocks?
Earnestly request you to talk about the kind of questions you faced in DI.
Do you think the new DI section is in general more difficult than SC in verbal?

Thanks a lot in advance.
Hi techie0912,

1. Very similar, and nope. :)

I've been obsessively analysing official (verbal) questions for the longest time now, and I didn't see anything alarming on my test. The difficulty level ramped up pretty quickly, but (a) I can't be absolutely sure about that and (b) that's how the current GMAT also works. I got some long passages, but so have other people who've taken the current GMAT.

2. The test is adaptive, so difficulty is hard to pin down. Verbal question distribution was in line with what I expected (CR heavy on str/wkn/assumption and only one boldface question).

3. I did think that I saw more questions on probability than I'd normally expect, but I'd wait for the quant experts to weigh in on this.

4. Yes! We definitely have "verbal DS" in the DI section.

As for SC, it comes down to your strengths. I'm very strong at SC (in terms of both accuracy and speed). DI doesn't let me get almost-always 100% accuracy while also saving more than a minute per question (on average), so I'd say that SC is much easier than DI. But what's important here is how you feel about DI/SC.

Hi Ajitesh,

Thank you for taking the time to create this post and I hope that your exam must have gone well. As a student, I have a few concerns related to New Focus Edition. Like, were there any experimental questions in this new test? Also, in what ways the new test is different from the current one in terms of an algorithm? Do you think that the official practice tests of Focus Edition are difficult or easy in comparison with the real test? How is the Data Insights, quant, and verbal section different from the current version? Lastly, what is the piece of advice you would like to give to the students who have been studying for the current version for a long time? Your feedback will be much appreciated.

Thank you!
Hi poojaarora1818,

I think the Focus Edition has experimental questions, but I can't say for sure (I haven't received my ESR). Try not to worry about experimental questions—they're not identified, so guessing is always going to be risky.

Although I found them a little easier than the actual test, I do think the official practice tests are good, at least as far as the verbal section is concerned. Keep in mind that (a) even instructors aren't immune to test day pressure :) and (b) I didn't need to analyse questions while I was solving the official practice tests (I did that afterwards). All of this is to say that I can't be sure that the actual test was tougher than the official practice tests.

I suggest that you play to your strengths, and take the test that you think can help you get a better score. If money is not an issue, you could also take both tests if you find yourself unable to choose between the two tests.

Makes sense. Went through your video, really helpful observations. Thanks for sharing.

Would you say that DI was more difficult than practice mocks 1-6? Also, did you come across any unseen type of graph - heard a few people getting weird graphs (something they have never seen before).

Again, thanks for all your first-hand insights. Really helpful.
Hi nnvin,

I did find DI to be tougher than expected, but it could simply have been bad luck. And yes, there were some very funky charts in the DI section.

You're welcome, and I'm glad you found the debrief helpful.

So “verbal DS” questions (which made up about 3 of your ~6 DS questions, if I understand correctly) are in fact a real thing—not just a rumor! Great to know, thanks.

Why didn’t GMAC include any good examples of this question type in the O.G., then? Strange.

Ajitesh, did you get any Geometry-esque questions or the test was devoid of any functions or figures or references to volume or area?

Hi bb,

No geometry at all in my quant section. One DI question needed area = l*b, but that's about all the geometry I saw on my Focus test.
