Not clear - why is B incorrect? - isnt it a present-tense activity of hormones that adjust permeability? (I mean this phenomenon is till happening)?
A would mean that amphibians developed it at a point in time (in the past) and that has adjusted the permeability of the skin?
Expert advice needed, would like to understand the flaw in my understanding here :)

This is a poorly written question.
Apart from A,all the answer choices are wrong because of S-V issue. Now lets analyze A.First,we need to use a comma before which and second we need to use that instead of the non essential which.

Hi Madhavi1990 ,

B has Subject Verb error. It says Hormones THAT adjusts. Hormones are plural, hence it should be adjust.

I agree with your point on A but A is the only best possible answer.

Does that make sense?

yes completely - I realize the S-V issue in B here

We use "which" instead of "That" as the sentence after hormones is an additional information and the former sentence is complete even without it.

I feel that it is not a good quality question. Although A seems to be the best answer out of all the 5.

Amphibians have been able to maintain a specific level of hydration in and out of water ever since they developed neurohypophysial hormones which adjusted the permeability of their skin.

Developing the hormones happened in the past but adjusting the permeability still happens. IMO which adjust the permeability of the skin is right.

A) which adjusted
B) that adjusts
C) which has adjusted
D) that has been adjusting
E) having adjusted

Source-Gmatfree

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:

Creating a filter: We read the prompt, ignoring the "neuro-" word for now. The sentence passes the subject-verb test and doesn't raise flags. We proceed to the answer choices to proceed exhaustively and eliminate choices based on objective defects.

Finding objective defects: Choice (B) has a grammatically singular verb, so it's out. Same with (C) and (D). We are referring to the grammatically plural "hormones."

So we are down to (A) and (E). Choice (E) sounds weird and is flawed. When a clause is used to define or describe a noun, it should begin with the relative pronouns "which" or "that."

The correct answer is (A).
