jushiwo0068,
If you do the following -- get a 3.4 GPA overall, retake this class and earn an A, score above your target schools' median GMAT and median quant score, and write an optional essay explaining the F -- then this class will not hold you back when you apply to top 10 schools. Academics is only piece of the puzzle, of course. The more leadership, impact, and professional success you can demonstrate, the better your chances.

Hello, I am a senior student at one of the best public school in the states. I am an international student. Currently, I am having a 3.3 GPA in applied math major. However, my grandpa was left me during my final week, because I grew up with my grandpa for more than 12 years, he was my dearest family member, I was very depressed and cannot focus on my finals. I skewed one final and I will get an F (for retaking, because I cannot retake a C- class, and I do not want to get a C), I can retake to get an A but the old F will not be cover. This is a finance class, I have chance to do well on CFA test to proof my learning ability. Hopefully, I will get a 3.4+ GPA. Will this hurt my application? How can I do to get into a top 10 B-school?
I was planning to get a 730 or higher GMAT score.
If this is the case, should I include it my situation in the optional essay?
