Ancient Egyption medical treatises of around the middle of the second millennium before the Christian era, not only contain plenty of incantations and mantic recipes, but they also contain valuable compilations of pharmacological discoveries.

A. Ancient Egyptian medical treatises of around the middle of the second millennium before the Christian era, not only contain plenty of incantations and mantic recipes, but they also contain valuable compilations of pharmacological discoveries. CORRECT (use THEY for subordinate clause after BUT )

B. Ancient Egyptian medical treatises around the middle of the second millenium before Christian era, contain plenty of incantations and mantic recipes but they also contain valuable compilations of pharmacological discoveries. (LACKS CONTRAST plus usin BUT +SUBJ with no comma precceded by but is not correct logical choice )

C. Ancient Egyptian Medical treatises around the middle of the second millennium before Christian era, contains plenty of incantations and mantic recipes, but they contain valuable compilations of pharmacological discoveries. (SVA error = treaties (p) + verb contains(s) )

D. Ancient Egyptian medical treatises of around the middle of the second millennium before the Christian era, not only contain plenty of incantations and also contain valuable compilations of pharmacological discoveries. (incorrect idiom to express not only X ,but/but also /also.. Y)

E. Ancient Egyptians medical treatises of around the middle of the second millennium before the Christian era, not only contain plenty of incantations, but also compilations of pharmacological valuable discoveries.( no SUBJ iven in subordinate clause . either remove comma or intoduce pronoun = they to rectify E)

IMO A

Ancient Egyption medical treatises of around the middle of the second millennium before the Christian era, not only contain plenty of incantations and mantic recipes, but they also contain valuable compilations of pharmacological discoveries.

A. Ancient Egyptian medical treatises of around the middle of the second millennium before the Christian era, not only contain plenty of incantations and mantic recipes, but they also contain valuable compilations of pharmacological discoveries. I initially debated the usage of "they" in the second clause. It could be considered redundant, but it is not clear that it is. As of now, I hold on to this option.

B. Ancient Egyptian medical treatises around the middle of the second millennium before Christian era, contain plenty of incantations and mantic recipes but they also contain valuable compilations of pharmacological discoveries. Use "the" before the name of a specific era ("the Christian era"). There is no "not only" to correctly complete the idiomatic expression "not only X, but also Y", without which it becomes a simple contrast - there is no contrast being made. Eliminate.

C. Ancient Egyptian Medical treatises around the middle of the second millennium before Christian era, contains plenty of incantations and mantic recipes, but they contain valuable compilations of pharmacological discoveries. Subject verb agreement problem. Plural "treatises" should be associated with a plural verb "contain" and not singular "contains". Eliminate.

D. Ancient Egyptian medical treatises of around the middle of the second millennium before the Christian era, not only contain plenty of incantations and also contain valuable compilations of pharmacological discoveries. Incomplete "not only X, but also Y" structure as there is no "but also". Eliminate.

E. Ancient Egyptians medical treatises of around the middle of the second millennium before the Christian era, not only contain plenty of incantations, but also compilations of pharmacological valuable discoveries. The removal of "mantic recipes" changes the meaning. I am not sure if that is by error. If we assume that "mantic recipes" is indeed present, another error the incorrect usage of "Egyptians", which means Egyptian people. The correct adjective for "medical treatises" is "Egyptian". Eliminate.

Since the other four options have clear errors, we can go with option (A).

Hope this helps.

How is a) correct? It violates the "not only X, but also Y" format by sticking a 'they' in between 'but' and 'also'.
