Not to be a contrarian but, all of my essays for all of my apps were over by about 5-10% and I got into the programs I applied to. Yes, you should be following the directions, but I don't think they're as strict as people may think. If you have a good story to tell, going over by 50 words won't hurt if you're a good candidate anyways. On the flip side, I would still make an honest effort to eliminate redundancies, unnecessary words, etc. even if you're at or below the word count.
While I don't think MBA admission offices do word counts and ding people if they are little over the word limit...
Every essay I've completed either has a fixed word count or page limit. It doesn't say "we recommend no more than 500 words", it says "maximum word count: 500." To me, there is no wishy washy language there, and it is pretty clear what the instructions are. If we can't follow the instructions for an MBA essay, will we be able to follow clear instructions in school and post-MBA?
Just my 2 cents.
