Hello,
Studying for the GMAT has been a struggle to say the least. I am aiming to take the exam in August but i am having some major difficulties with PS and DS especially in DS. I am weak at math, so i am very intimidated by the math portion of the exam. I have the OG bundle and judging from my diagnostic test i need major help. I am just overwhelmed by the amount of materials to go through. Any suggestions on how to improve? and do i have any hope in passing being as though i am not the greatest in math?

Thanks in advance!

Hi EllieAja,

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied?
2) What study materials have you used so far?
3) How have you scored on EACH of your CATs (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
4) What is your goal score?
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
6) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

I just started my studying, I am only 2 weeks in. The only study material i have is the OG bundle and i just downloaded the GMAT Club math and verbal books. I took the diagnostic test (both quant and verbal) in the OG and did very poorly. I have not taken the CATs yet.

Honestly i am not aiming for 700 score because that would be unrealistic for me, especially this being my first time taking the exam. I would say maybe 600/620. I am looking to apply to universities here in Houston and Austin Texas, as well as in Canada (York university, University of Alberta and University of Calgary) for 2019 fall.

Hi EllieAja,

Since you've now put in a couple of week of studying, it would be a good idea to take a FULL-LENGTH practice CAT Test; you can download 2 for free from www.mba.com (and they come with some additional practice materials). That score will give us a good sense of your natural strengths and weaknesses and will help provide a basis for comparison as you continue to study. A FULL CAT takes about 4 hours to complete, so make sure that you've set aside enough time to take it in one sitting. Once you have those scores, you should report back here and we can come up with a study plan.

Is it a good idea to still take the test even though i do not feel prepared? Also the CAT test on mba.com you are referring to is the GMATPrep test?

Hi EllieAja,

That initial diagnostic CAT is important - it helps to define your strengths and weaknesses and gives you a basis for comparison as you continue to study. Most Test Takers are not happy with that first CAT result, but that's not a big deal - the extra months of available study time are there so that you can IMPROVE on this initial practice result. While you might be tempted to push back this initial CAT, you have to be careful about pushing it further and further and further back. There are aspects to Test Day that you can only learn by taking FULL-LENGTH CATs in a realistic fashion - and we really need that first result before you can make any big adjustments to how you approach this process.
