Hi Everyone,

Today I wrote GMAT exam, here is the result:

GMAT: Quant - 48, Verbal - 37, IR - 7 and overall - 690

Personal details: Indian, female

Education:
1. B.Tech in Information Technology (75.5%)
2. Certificate in Management Practices (with a focus on Management Studies and Liberal Arts)
3. Passed CFA level 1, will be appearing for level 2 in June 2019

Work experience:
1. Accenture - Software Engineer- 2 years 3 months
2. Max Skill First Limited (part of Max Group, India) - Assistant Manager, Strategy and Business Governance, approximately 2 years

Target Schools: Insead, HEC, IMD, Rotterdam, and Mannheim

I want to apply for classes starting late 2019 or early 2020 (hence application process will close by early 2019)

Queries:
1. I need your help in understanding my chances at these colleges with given GMAT score.
2. Should I re-write GMAT? (I don't have much time to prepare for GMAT as application deadlines are in January, February, etc.)

Please help!!

A few thoughts for you to think on Shalini:
  1. The overall profile, and especially the transition from software engg to strategy role looks pretty good. It would be important to understand if that certificate course was a full time or a part-time one.
  2. For reasons mentioned here, we do not speculate on school selection. That being said, purely from the GMAT perspective, you'd be a on the lower side against your Indian competition pool. The retake strategy should however depend on your confidence level. If you think you can manage the retake, your day job and working on the applications, all in parallel, then it's nearly a must do. If not, then prioritize applications for now potentially.
  3. For European programs, the point here is relevant. Do you have any?
  4. The CFA will certainly help. It would be important to understand if there is anything on the ECs front though. Read here to know why they matter.

Hope this helps some.

Thanks Manish for your input.

Taking forward our discussion, here are few more pointers:
1. (a) This certificate program was a full-time 1.5-year course (It covered all management subjects along with a focus on (i) Liberal Arts such as Philosophy, Public Policy, etc. and (ii) personal growth; this program can be considered as a post-graduation)
1. (b) As part of this course I have also worked directly for a month with CFO (Asia, Pacific) of Starwood Hotels (now Marriott)
2. International work-ex: (i) At Accenture, I have worked with European clients and (ii) At my current job I have successfully formulated strategy to get a US-based business partner on-board and working very closely with them
3. Also my current job requires me to work with senior leadership teams of my organization and of clients
4. EC activities (if these count):
(i) Trained Kathak (a form of Indian classical dance) dancer and have performed on multiple national platforms
(ii) Won several prizes in painting competitions
(iii) Coordinated/organized multiple events during undergrad and postgrad

Full-time is good. Even better if it has a decent brand/pedigree.

The international experience will remain a soft-spot frankly.

Some of those ECs can help; not sure if anything is active now however. Recency effect is quite critical.
