As Charles Darwin observed, natural selection operates whenever individuals of one
genetic composition are better at reproducing than that of others.
A. that of others
B. the other
C. another
D. those of another
E. that of the next

I thought "others" make more sense here...

I believe that your underlining is incorrect; 'than' should not be underlined from what I understand from the answer choices.
If so, I pick D.
we need plural 'those' to refer to 'individuals'

B it is

guys see we are here comparing individuals not anything of individuals so those of otehr or that of other is out of Question..

Now you can certainly say that "you are better than the other "

So there is nothing wrong in B

C is wrong ebcause better than another is wrong cos there is no another mentioned here. for general use , it gotta be other/others

Abhi,
We are infact comparing individuals. But B does not compare individuals. B compares individuals to the "the other (genetic composition)". Adding a "those of" infact corrects the comparison to individuals. i.e individuals of the other genetic composition. Its like saying individuals from one class are better off than those of the other. saying "individuals of one class are better off than the other" would be comparing individuals to class.

D. another here refers to many other groups. the other is usually only used for a distinct other group. That sounds rather ridiculous in this situation b/c there is certainly more than one group.

genetic composition are better at reproducing than that of others.
A. that of others
B. the other
C. another
D. those of another
E. that of the next

First of all E is out without any dilemma.
Second, we have used comparative form "better" so, "another" is out. Means C and D are out. Use "one...another" while comparing more than two items.
Third, other Vs Others,
that of others => individuals of one genetic composition are better than that of other genetic compositions.
the other=> other compares to whom? other individuals or other genetic composition?
Again, that can refer to both singular as well as plural.

My choice is A.

Would like to know OA.

Clearly we need those to refer to plural noun individuals, so only D is correct.

A & E use "that" are not correct.

B & C are incorrect since the sentence makes comparison of genetic composition in each individual

Actually, the same question has been posted here
