Them is incorrectly referring to "executives" whereas it should refer to "opportunities"
Therefore A, D and E are out.
Also, the correct usage is "AS".

In C , "should" is not correct. And "it" is incorrectly referring back to "capital"

A. are demanding is incorrect usage. It cannot be an ongoing action. Simple past is always the case for general actions. Also "them" is ambiguous.
B. Correct usage of the command subjunctive.
C. Should cannot be used in "bossy verbs that: subjunctive" construction.
D. "Due to" which is a noun modifier and must ALWAYS be replacable with "Caused by" is illogical.
E. Distorts Meaning. It means the investors are the reason to balance opportunities. That is NOT what the statement intends to mean. It means the balance is because of the investor's demand to...

1.) Demand is a bossy verb( command subjunctive) and should always be followed by a THAT
2.) finance them is ambiguous - can refer to either opportunities or executives. only option B removes this ambiguity by using "these opportunities" to refer back clearly --> this one leads directly to correct answer :)

A. As investors are demanding companies to actively manage their business portfolios, executives must increasingly balance investment opportunities against the capital that's available to finance them - Wrong - Usage of them is ambiguous

B. As investors demand that companies actively manage their business portfolios, executives must increasingly balance investment opportunities against the capital that's available to finance these opportunities - Correct

C. As investors demand that companies should actively manage their business portfolios, executives must increasingly balance investment opportunities with the capital that's available to finance it - Wrong - Usage of it is simply wrong

D. Due to the investors demand that companies actively manage their business portfolios, executives must increasingly balance investment opportunities with the capital that's available to finance them - Wrong - Usage of them is ambiguous

1) demand is in subjunctive mood..Subjunctive forms are used to express states of demand, wish, judgment, opinion, necessity, emotion, possibility,
demand should be followed by 'that'...
2) them wrongly refers to investors...
B corrects these errors.. so ans B

can anyone please explain why B is correct ,i know that should is not used in subjunctive but isn't the correct idiom "balance with" ,

Balance against is correct idiom. Moreover the important issue here is pronoun here.

As investors are demanding companies to actively manage their business portfolios, executives must increasingly balance investment opportunities against the capital that's available to finance them.

highlighted 'them' here is ambiguous because it can refer to executives or opportunities , both structurally and logically . Therefore we need to clarify what 'them' here refers to. Option B clearly replace 'them' pronoun with 'these opportunities' .


B. As investors demand that companies actively manage their business portfolios, executives must increasingly balance investment opportunities against the capital that's available to finance these opportunities

Them is ambiguous, we can't clearly find out that them is referencing to what .. Them should refer to opportunities.

A, D,E is out.

In C "it" is also ambiguous or rather say wrong as opportunities is plural and hence it is wrong.

B is correct which clearly writes "these opportunities"
