Could anyone explain the question stem in Lamen's Terms?

During the first calendar year throughout which the graph suggests a decrease over time in the number of devices in use of Version __, Version ___became available.

I ended up marking "2" & "4". Since, Version 4 is made available when Version 2 starts declining.

I am tricked as well brother, but we cannot complain much as the description clearly said it

"Version 1 became available at the beginning of June 2006 (6/06), and a new version became available at the beginning of each subsequent June, with Version 5 becoming available at the beginning of June 2010 (6/10)"

As of the beginning of June 2012 (6/12), Device D (an Internet-connected device) was available in exactly 5 versions. Version 1 became available at the beginning of June 2006 (6/06), and a new version became available at the beginning of each subsequent June, with Version 5 becoming available at the beginning of June 2010 (6/10). The graph shows the number of units of Device D in use, by version, at the beginning of each June from 2006 through 2012. For example, at the beginning of June 2008 (6/08), there were approximately 10,000 units of Device D in use, approximately 5,000 of which were Version 1 and approximately 5,000 of which were Version 2.

Based on the information above, select from each drop-down menu the option that completes the statement most accurately.

During the first calendar year throughout which the graph suggests a decrease over time in the number of devices in use of Version , Version became available.

It is a cumulative graph. First observe what it shows. The use of all the versions is increasing year on year except version 2 which peaked in June 09 and then starting declining. It kept declining till the June of 12.

Of course, as each version was introduced in June of each year, the number in use started from 0 and began rising from 6/06 to 6/10.

During the first calendar year throughout which the graph suggests a decrease over time in the number of devices in use of Version __, Version __ became available.

We know that version 2 is the only one that decreased in calendar years 2010 and 2011. So first calendar year throughout which the graph suggests there was a decrease over time in the number of devices of version 2 was 2010. In 2010, version 5 was released.

ANSWER version 2, version 5

During the first calendar year throughout which the graph suggests a decrease over time in the number of devices in use of Version [2], Version [5] became available.

We can see version 2 start declining from June 2009

Version 4 became available in 2009. However, in 2009, version increased and then decrease

Only until 2010, version 2 saw an increase overtime throughout the year. Version 5 became available in 2010

Are real exam questions similar? I'm solving the DI Review Questions and it's starting to feel like either the questions are too tough to answer in the given time or they have some hidden cipher that must not be overlooked. DS seems to be my only hope.

These are quite easy graphs which most people use in their excel work life.. Only GMAC has made this complicated from verbal point of view. Here is the visual depiction to make you understand.

Can someone explain why not 4
First calendar year throughout which the graph suggests there was a decrease over time = The first year that had the decrease from Jan to Dec = year 10.
Ver 2 started decreasing in year 9, but just later half of year 9 (not the entire calendar year).
--> during year 10, ver 4 was in the market already so cannot be the answer
--> during year 10, ver 5 was released --> answer key

Reshmi7 if you look at the graph, and think on the lines of calendar year, for 2009, the graph first goes up, and then comes down. So it doesn't "decrease over time" for the whole year like it does for 2010 and 2011. Hence 2010 has release of version 5, which is the answer!

cant agree more... I think GMAT questions nowadays don't focus on knowledge at all, but keep setting traps in the questions.

I'm going through these new DI (IR) OG questions, and it seems to me the GMAT is now resorting to trapping people using English and purposefully obscuring information in order to artificially make the test appear hard (hard to score well) ? Disappointing...

Its a reading exam. A lot of it is whether you read and retain information. That is my reading of the exam.

Hi,

The catch word is calendar.

During the first calendar year throughout which the graph suggests a decrease over time in the number of devices in use of Version __, Version ___became available.

So, we look at first calendar year, for which we have to look from 01/07 to 01/08 and then from 01/08 to 01/09.

Where do these 01/08 or 01/09 etc lie?
They are in middle of every two tick, that is middle of 06/07 and 06/08 will give 01/08.

Now, when you know what you have to look at, look for a period HALF way between two ticks to next HALF way between adjoining ticks that gives a decrease in any version.
THe decrease is only in version 2, and the entire calendar year is given by point from 01/10 to 01/11. During this period, version 5 starts.

If you are looking from 06/09 to 06/10, you will surely mark 4 as answer, an answer that would be wrong.

Answer: Version 2 and Version 5.
Hi chetan2u , how can we say version5 contributed for the decline throughout the calendar year 1/10 to 1/11. When the version5 came into existence only in 06/10? Normally since the decline started with version 4 and even continued to the next calendar year wouldn’t that mean version4 was the major factor ?

OK Now that I read the question again I get it. Questions asks "which became available" and NOT which caused it. My bad.

So the question basically asks that ,"In the first year THROUGHOUT which the graph saw the decline, which new version launched...?" now the version 2 is the first version which saw decline starting from June '06 onwards but remember we need the year in which it declined throughout the year not just the last seven months, such is the case with the year '06 and the year we are looking for is '07, and this is the trickiest part of the question, once we understand this then we can answer that version 5 became available in the mentioned year.
