As witnessed by the Shawnee and Choctaw nations, the Iroquois coalesced as a people in the 17th century and developed three distinct political and geographical divisions-eastern, western and southern-that created different alliances with nearby European powers.

A As witnessed by the Shawnee and Choctaw nations, the Iroquois coalesced as a people in the 17th century and developed three distinct political and geographical divisions-eastern, western and southern-that created

B As witnessed by the Shawnee and Choctaw nations, the Iroquois coalescing as a people in the 17th century and developing three distinct political and geographical divisions-eastern, western and southern-that created

C Like the Shawnee and Choctaw nations, the Iroquois coalescing as a people in the 17th century and developing three distinct political and geographical divisions-eastern, western and southern-that created

D Like the Shawnee and Choctaw nations, the Iroquois coalesced as a people in the 17th century and developed three distinct political and geographical divisions-eastern, western and southern-that created
E Like the Shawnee and Choctaw nations, the Iroquois coalesced as a people in the 17th century and developed three distinct political and geographical divisions-eastern, western and southern-creating

C that refers to southern means southern created something eliminated
D same reason as above

What in "d" "that" refers too...and why it is wrong.

and in "E" what creating refers to the closest noun " division.....

Also if "we" havr comma before creating will it be still correct.

Please let me know. thanks in advance

A & B gone for the usage of "as". We need like to compare noun entities here.

C -- use of "developing"; Verb-tense issue. It's an action in past.
D -- use of "that" modifier which illogically suggests that the three divisions created alliances rather than the Iroquis
E -- Fixes the error in D. Correct choice.

E Like the Shawnee and Choctaw nations, the Iroquois coalesced as a people in the 17th century and developed three distinct political and geographical divisions-eastern, western and southern-creating

Let's find the splits here! :-)

First, "As witnessed by the Shawnee and Choctaw nations" is incorrect here -- it implies that the Shawnee and Choctaw nations are the ones doing the witnessing, which doesn't make sense. The Shawnee and Choctaw nations aren't witnessing anything -- we have witnessed the Shawnee and Choctaw nations coalesce as a people. So we want to use "Like the Shawnee and Choctaw nations" here. This eliminates A and B.

Next, we see "coalescing" in choice C. This removes the verb in the sentence (since "coalescing" is acting as a modifier, not a verb). That's a major problem! So C is incorrect, because it does not have a verb.

Finally, we see "that created" vs. "creating". The dashes here that separate "eastern, western and southern" can be thought of as acting like commas. Now, "that" is a restrictive modifier, which means it is incorrect to use after a comma (or in this case, a dash). You can read more about restrictive vs. non-restrictive modifiers here: That vs. Which on the GMAT

That eliminates D, so E is our answer! :-)

Hi,

I picked D over E for the reason that creating is the correct usage but the comma is missing, without which it can't work.

On the other hand, that created is not the best modifier but not ungrammatical.

Can you please elaborate how option E works without a comma? As far as I understand, the hyphens are essentially brackets, not commas.
