Young Professional of Nanaimo: Group of Under 35 year old professionals (Currently 80 members). I've started a "Professional Development" section within the group. Doing seminars and public speaking on "peak performance" or bettering yourself as a professional.
Volunteer program I've started to help and motivate High School students in Grades 11 and 12, educating them on future educational opportunities. I also help them put together a timeline, help in setting up their goals, help coordinate discussions/seminars with university counselors and help craft applications for universities, scholarships, bursaries, etc. I hope to expand the program and bring in college/university graduates to volunteer at their respective high schools. Have it setup city wide by end of 2011 school year.
I hope to expand on my public speaking and professional development talks. Put together a team of motivated individuals to start a website/blog by September 2010. End goal to publish a magazine throughout my local cities.
- Have a DJ business on the side, dj'ing corporate events and weddings.
CFA starts this September.

Why an MBA/Goals after graduationAn MBA along with my engineering degree and family upbringing in business would help me have a leg up against the competition. More importantly, to work for bigger firms or smaller firms that are making a difference, I would need the MBA as a pre-req to land one of these jobs. As well, I don't think my current experience would help me get up the career ladder as quickly or as painlessly as 2 years at a top MBA program would. I have faith in my ability to move up, but an MBA is a powerful degree and I feel like the knowledge and contacts gained from completing the degree would far outweigh not attending.
I would like to attend one of the top 7 American schools. Besides going to one of the best schools and increasing my chances of employment after graduation along with a handsome return on my investment I want to be surrounded by like minded individuals who are passionately motivated and driven. Regardless of what I do, I perform just as well as those closest to me, If I surround myself with the best and brightest I feel like I will be better off.
My Dream is to go to Columbia for Finance (Hence the CFA) and work in the finance world until I can start my own Firm.
My reasons for why finance stem from the fact that my grade 2 teacher wrote I could not work with money or couldn't count money on my report card. Needless to say 20 years later, I would like to prove her wrong. Besides that, the major reason is I'm an individual who gets satisfaction from helping others. (Sound corny but I can provide examples) I always put myself on the back burner to help others. I see running a private equity firm or managing portfolios (individual level or for small to medium size businesses at the community level) something where I could put all my strengths to work in helping others achieve financial prosperity. Coming from a business family, I have always been able to grasp business concepts easily. Business minded with an engineering degree that has taught me to be detailed orientated all along with a financial knowledge from a CFA & MBA would allow me to put all my strengths to work.
Right after graduation I feel like with my business experience and CFA I can be competitive for business or financial analyst jobs. With my business experience and EC's in public speaking/motivating others/advising students I would even consider myself competitive for consulting positions. Of course the end goal being to open up my own firm to help either in my local community, which is going through quite a bit of expansion, or stay in/close to the city of the university where I would graduate from.

What I'm concerned about:1.) GMAT Score: is it too low? I feel like I underperformed. Since the test I've been mentally crushed by the score. I was scoring 750 on GMATPrep's. Is the Quant too low for finance (I was scoring 50-51 there)? I was scoring low 40's in Verbal too. I don't plan on applying til 2012 but I'm very concerned about my GPA, hence the worry about my GMAT score now. I figured I could ease Adcoms with a solid GMAT score. I don't mind writing it again if I have to. If its in my best interests to write it again, Should I go with a course to get over the hump?
2.) I'm also concerned about my recent W.E. within the family business. The work at the two businesses is not similar to big business work. The experience is comparable but on a small scale of course. Plenty of accomplishments, mostly entails obtaining large new contracts for both businesses. BUT I just don't know how Adcoms take to family businesses, especially Adcoms from the top schools. I have worked there all throughout high school and university, albeit at a reduced role during university, specifically my grades in my final year can be attributed partially to the family business, but Isn't that a cheap excuse for a low GPA?
Now that my younger siblings have been able to step in, I can finally look at my own career. I'm at a huge fork in the road as to where I should be working. Would going back to an Engineering firm or applying for a finance related job help me? The reason I mention an engineering firm is that within the two years before applying I could earn my P.Eng (Professional Engineering certification, that would allow me to practice on my own). Or does staying with the family business help me more so now? To be honest I would be required to still help out even If I landed a new job. So finding a new job would be in my best interest as I would be able to show what I can accomplish for a different firm. Would it be better if I wait until I complete CFA level 1 and try for a finance job?
I'm at a huge huge fork in the road here. Haven't been able to properly sleep for the last couple days. It's so much easier helping others...
I need to figure out the best course of action for my next two years here. Correct any wrongs in my application now. I know I shouldn't be tailoring my experiences in hopes of getting into a top school but I figure, even if I continue to do half the things I'm doing now and don't get into a top school, I'll be a better person and further ahead then I'm now, putting in the time volunteering and doing my CFA.

I understand none of this is related to the application process consultants normally assist with so If this doesn't fall into the scope of work you normally assist students with, could you point me in the right direction?
