Hello,
I am Abhijit Pal, I am B.Tech from IIT Dhanbad in 2016 and is working in Coal India Limited (PSU) since 2016.
I have been actively involved in Project Formation and Project Management work in my company and have gained considerable experience in Project management, Leadership, CAPEX and Import.
I wish to do MBA from a renowned institute ( India/ abroad). I am not sure if I should persue executive MBA or full time MBA or which colleges I can apply to.
I wish to change my profession of work too after MBA.
Can someone please provide some Insights.
PS: ignore spelling errors, i am posting from mobile😆
Hi Abhijit,
A couple of points here:
1. Mostly everyone does an MBA for a career change, so your reason is valid. Having worked in the same industry and same company for 8 years can lead to hurdles in changing jobs, but that's where the MBA helps reset things for you.
We have helped several applicants who have done an MBA with similar profile like yours, and post- MBA, they have been able to change some element in their careers- industry/ function/ geography. (Case in point is one applicant who after working for 10 years in an oil and gas PSU, graduated from IESE this year and is joining an internal strategy role in an European company. So he was able to change all 3 elements post MBA).
2. This brings me to my second point- where do you want to do an MBA from? India or abroad? How do you decide this?
Typically, you will want to work in the country/ region from where you do your MBA. It will help you gain some valuable global experience and also pay your loans by earning in the currency in which you paid your tuition fee.
This does not have to be a long term decision, but you will want atleast a few years experience in that region. Once you decide on the region, you can finalize the b-schools. IMO, you can do apply anywhere with your specific experience- India, UK, Europe, USA, or Asia. Its a matter of what your preferences and financial, social, geographical considerations are.
3. Executive MBA/ Full time MBA - Abroad, an exec MBA means that you continue to work while studying for MBA. You will have a few days every 1-2 months in the classroom, so you will need to travel or this. In India, Exec MBAs are run by the IIMs, but these are one-year, full-time, immersive MBA programs, akin to programs such as ISB PGP. I guess, when you mention exec MBAs, you mean the ones run by IIMs. A one year MBA makes sense and there are several options available that can be useful for you.
hope I have answered all your questions.
