Hi All,
Namaskaar?
Hope you all are safe. I pray for everyones' good health.
This is my first post of this kind in GMATClub.
I think (not researched), what I am writing is an issue with the most of the students from developing nations wanting to advance their career in finance and consulting. We have to go through lots of mental rollercoaster except some who have good network and family financial support. I am also from the former group. Generally we go through following hurdles (based on my story).
1. Poor Academics but Huge Dreams
High academic grade from mediocre (extremely low level) institutions but no, literally no, exposure at all. Its only the grade based on 3 hrs of paper based examination. I also have 3.7 CGPA out of 4 in my BBA but I remember nothing academic from all those 4 years long undergrad journey. Teachers or lectures always used to discuss probable questions for exams in whole 6 months semester.
2. No Good Post UnderGrad Experience
There are no good companies to work for in my country. Few multinational companies there but why would they recruit one like me as they demand either someone foreign degree or someone who is close relative of the political leaders or other wealthy ones. However there are some national and local level retail banks which recruit BBA undergrads in entry level positions (clerk level). But experience is again mediocre. Can't dream of HBS MBA with this.
After completing my BBA in June 2018, I worked as a Business Development Executive in portfolio management department (it just sounds amazing, nothing amazing at all) for a local branch of a small merchant bank in my country between February 2019 and March 2020. I left cause I learnt nothing in 1 year. Waiting for COVID-19 to over and will start next job again in entry level position in a retail bank.
3. Gap
Now as there is no good academic background and no quality experience (though working for 5 to 10 years in banks one can reach the managerial level), one has to decide either to continue and be optimistic or go to a good business school. Latter is what I preferred. I want to get into Impact Consulting or IB, so I must have some quality business knowledge to be able to get there. But MBA is far beyond my reach. Just 1 year of experience and not so good academics, hard to get selected into top tier or 2nd tier MBA. Even if I get selected in some good MBA program, I won't be able to leverage it due to lack of experience. So here I decide.
4. Decision
I will start all over again. First I will do good business masters program (MIM or MSc Finance) from top tier B School and get into a very good company (which is far from my reach for now), work there for few years and then God for MBA from Harvard(I am sorry but I really want to go to Harvard). But again a question arises!
5. Finance and Decision 2
How are you going to finance your masters degree from top tier B School? Remembered!
The major gap, the major hurdle!
My country list my family as the a lower middle class family with yearly income of just $2000 (before tax), thanks to my father, and no savings at all. It was actually $3800 till February 2020 (before I quit job). (/?Hey I am writing all these stuffs just to give you a overall picture of myself so that I would get a genuine guidance which could change my life.?/)
So after that, though being hope less for some time , I came with an optimistic thought that if I score 720 plus in GMAT and apply to 2nd tier b school, if nottop tier, I will get full ride and pursue my dream.
And then I started preparing for GMAT with the free PDFs of the materials available online. (though I am finding it hard, it's adventurous).
Ohhhh.. ..! You read it all.
Thank you and apology to take your precious time.
It's almost over now!
I assume you might have found many flaws in my reasoning. I request you to please mention them and show me the better path.
I will make it easy⤵️.
Some questions:
1.Do you agree with my view, mentioned in part 3 (Gap), about doing MBA?
2. Is my first decision mentioned in part 4 (Decision)worth pursuing?
3. Is it possible to get full ride based on profile?. If yes, how should I work on my profile? I hope you know in brief about my academics and experience. To add, I have some leadership experience in coordinating some college level events during my undergrad and hosting all of them. And some participations in public speaking, presentation competitions.
4. What will you suggest me now?
