You really think so? Most people would have submitted pretty close to the Jan 3rd Deadline. So that gives them about 10 days (including weekends) before the decision date. I think that is not enough time to effectively go through the R-2 applications, pick out the ones they would like to invite to interview, compare them against R-1 applicants who have been interviewed and then make a decision for R-1. At most, I believe they might use this time to decide between admit/waitlist for a few strong applicants who have a common background (e.g. Indian I.T). I definitely do not think that the Adcom is using this time to decide between Admit/Reject based on the strength of the R-2 applicants.

KK i think most schools tend to compare the 'stats' of the two rounds. So lets say they are on the border on a R1 applicant, say Indian, who has a high GMAT and not in IT, they might want to see if there are a lot more applicants in R2 who fall in that bucket. If there are, they might just WL him and compare the rest. I dont think they will read the essays but just the overall stats.
