FOR WAITLIST STUDENTS:

I went to visit UNC yesterday to get some feedback on how i can improve my application.

Looks like my GMAT was a big concern, as i am trying to get into investment management from an IT background.

Anything below 700 is not acceptable for a switch from IT into IM.

Any idea of how i can convince the school?

I'm not an expert, but from what you wrote it sounds like you need to retake the GMAT and aim for a higher score. What's your score now? Did they tell you that your score isn't high enough?

Doesn't seem like a real red flag based on the school's profile. Is there another section of your application that could be weak? You know your strengths and weaknesses better than anyone on the message board - try taking an objective look at your entire package. If that 680 really is the weakest part of your package, I don't know what else you can do other than retake the test.

From Business Week:

GMAT

*
o Are applicants required to take the GMAT? No
o If not, how are applicants' quantitative abilities checked before enrollment? Must submit GRE instead of GMAT
*
GMAT scores:
o Mean: 686
o Median: 700
*
Middle 80% range GMAT scores:
o From: 620
o To: 750

Fortunately I was just admitted into the UNC class of 2013, unfortunately I was not offered any type of scholarship assistance. UNC has been my top choice of programs to attend for awhile, but I cannot fathom paying 107K for out-of-state tuition + fees. I do have substantial scholarships from other schools that are similarly but slightly less ranked.

Does anyone know if UNC offers any type of out-of-state tuition waiver? I have heard that some schools will waive the out-of-state tuition for the 2nd year if you establish state residency. Also does UNC offer any type of GA positions to help pay for tuition? Or were these jobs handed out during scholarships.
I would really like to attend UNC, but the enormous out-of-state tuition makes it a tough ROI. With tuition + living I would be looking at north of 145k+ for two years of school.

I can only comment on the instate tuition matter here.
You eligibility is established when you enroll and its set for the rest of you attendance. Simply put you cant get a reduction your second year, unless the school gives a a scholarship at that point, which historically is very very rare.

Most schools like UNC/UT/IU are more likely to offer GA's to incoming students, at Indiana more than 1/2 are given the chance. You should also just call the school to confirm.

To echo what jordanhendrix said, yeah, it looks like in-state residency isn't something that can be fudged easily. $49K a year for tuition alone is def. a little tough to swallow for a program like KF.

https://gradschool.unc.edu/student/residency/

And Kilian, you don't really know enough about his background to assume 680 isn't low for his pool. If he was Indian, then that's definitely about 40-70 points too low.

You're right, I don't. Which is why I suggested he look at this own application package objectively to figure out where his weak spots are. The way I see it, his GMAT isn't low to the point where it is the only thing that is keeping him on the waitlist. Maybe it is. But if he doesn't have time to retake the test, he's going to need to find something else in his application to improve.

Just trying to help.

I have 7 years of WE, and my interviewer (Sherry Wallace) asked me whether I considered other MBA programs such as executive, weekend, etc.

I was worried about this question because I thought that it was a bad signal. I asked a friend from class of '12 about this, she told me that 7 years of WE is a plus for KFBS.

In the end, I have been accepted but I still can't figure out how admission committee treats candidates with 7-8 years of WE.

I have 10 years of WE and was not asked about considering other MBA programs. While this is above the average, I don't believe it could be a real issue for KFBS

"For Waitlisted friends" :
I got admit after being waitlisted twice(Applied in ER and got admit with R2).
I guess, it's important to convey that UNC is still on your priority list. In addition, showing your understanding of program and showing that you have enough understanding of UNS to hit the ground running, works in your favour. Obviously, any promotion or GMAT improvement is great., I had promotions, but no GMAT hike. Good Luck and don't loose the hope.

May I know the reason, why you have waitlisted twice ?? Did they give any feedback on your application while you waitlisted. ??

I'm waitlisted now. So please reply me...!!

hey guys,

Need your opinion: I need to decide between UNC Kenan-Flagler (no scholarship) vs Univ Southern California (USC) Marshall (half-tuition waiver). I have 5 yrs exp in IT and my future career aspirations lie in technology management/consulting. I see that UNC is higher ranked vis-a-vis USC. However, I'm guessing that location of USC might be favorable for me getting into good tech companies based in california/silicon valley in technology consulting, product management roles. Scholarship offered by USC is another compelling factor. So, which one would you guys recommend between UNC and USC? Any opinions are appreciated..

The difference between USC and UNC is definitely not worth 50k and probably not even worth 10-20k. I like to think of rankings as more clusters than straight out this school is better than the next one because it's one spot ahead. UNC, USC, GTown and Tepper are all similar caliber schools in the vein Michigan/Duke/Virginia would be similar.
