Got a waitlist email yesterday. Can't say that I'm pleased. Has this happened to any other ED applicants?

Unfortunately, I think we'll just have to wait. You can update the adcom if you feel there have been any material developments that will help your candidacy since you applied, but the reality is that our chances of getting in come down to the number of applicants with similar profiles that turn down CBS to go elsewhere (thus opening spots for people on the waitlist).

What do you think is the reason your were waitlisted? How did your interview go? Any problems? What is your profile? Are you international?

Hey

The AdCom have deferred their final decision on my application (so now I'm in RD) and have invited additional materials to support my candidacy. Any thoughts on what I could send it that could stand out and strengthen my application?

Thanks!

What is the difference between being waitlisted and being deferred, especially after being interviewed?

I got deferred (ED applicant). I was told that the deferral releases me from the ED committment so essentially I am in the RD pool now.

Perserverance - Did you get interviewed and then deferred? Thanks.

In other words, do you have to be interviewed to be deferred or waitlisted?

Sorry, I should have specified. I did interview and was deferred about 2 and a half weeks later. I'm not sure if you have to be interviewed to be deferred or waitlisted. It looks like it, but I can't say for sure.

I don't think waitlist comes into play until Round 2/Round 3. And I think for those of us who were deferred, we had interviews. I could be wrong though.

Actually, I was told by someone who also applied that they were 'deferred' as well, however, Columbia had given him a date when he could expect to hear that was earlier than the date they gave me. Seems like there is an 'ED deferral/waitlist' which doesn't release you from the ED committment and then there is a deferral to RD, which does.

There are no 'waitlists' yet; only deferrals.

The letter essentially goes like this - starts off with the usual spiel on how they value your loyalty etc. and how there are only so many spots. However, because your application was good, they have deferred making a decision until 1 Feb 2011 though they can contact you anytime. If you am still interested in being considered, you should let them know and that they welcome additional materials to strengthen your candidacy.

So I wrote to them to still consider my application and that is when they wrote back to say 'cool, you have been released from the ED commitment' implying that I am now an RD applicant. So this is not a waitlist situation because being accepted in not contingent upon others dropping out; it depends on how my application compares with all the new applications coming in now in RD (though only till Feb 1).
