I am submitting for the January intake in the next couple of days. I am a reapplicant who was waitlisted for the RD round for 2010. As a reapplicant, I am only submitting the one essay which has a recommended word limit of 750. I like my essay as it stands, but it is 866 words. Is this too far over the recommended limit? I have cut it down a lot already and feel as though I will have to remove some important information to make it any shorter. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Whittle it to 800, you will be fine, you can always cut some fat off, just checked my essay word count for essay two which has 500 word limit, mine is 542. So it's about 10% over the limit. I think as long as you stay within 10 to 15%, you will be alright. don't sweat it.

For information, one of my essay for CBS was over 900 words, but I come from a non-traditional background, and i got invited to interview.

But I took the risk after reading Wharton website:
Quote:
Candidates who have worked in nontraditional careers will need to explain issues in a little more detail. If that's your situation, please feel free to write more while still using your good judgment. I think it really depends on what you are writing. Exceeding word limits will not break you, for sure.

Hello folks,

I'm planning to apply in Columbia for Jan 2011 intake, I was just wondering if any accepted candidates or admission consultant can help evaluate my profile (below) and provide inputs for my application.

Executive summary of my profile:
o GMAT 680 (Q 48, V35, AWA 5.5)
o 11 years of full-time experience in IT with last 7 years in programme management in telecom
o International work experience in the UK for last 6.5 years and 4.5 years in India
o Successfully managed IT programmes of upto $6M budget and around 60-90 members involved in a
highly distributed manner
o Executive programme reporting to senior stakeholders (directors) and extensively worked with external customers
o Line management experience. Had responsibility of a 20 member team
o Bachelor of Engineering in Instrumentation & Control, Gujarat University, India, 1999. Secured
third rank in the academics

My concern about profile/Columbia concerns:
o Cookie cutter profile (IT, Indian, Eng.)
o No strong link with the US
o Post MBA, I'm aiming to come back to telecom - not very "inspiring" goal
o I plan to work in UK / India post MBA, not great Columbia network in these countries (is that true?)
o Even if I get an "admit", it may take much longer to get a student visa for Jan'11 intake

Yep, I could wait for another 2-5 weeks, they re not going to schedule a meeting of the admission committee just to take a decision on my case, I need way more people with "interview complete" status.

Why Columbia? Why now? You don't have to answer these questions for us, but you will need to address them in your essays.. You will also need to answer why an MBA is important for your career goals?

If you don't mind spending $250, why not give it a shot?

To guys,

I find adcom is holding Columbia on the road right now. Several members, including Amanda, of adcom are not in campus. So, I guess once they come back New York, they'll meet and review our applications. Yes, that's next week. So we might hear the result in a short time.
