Does anybody have any advice on suits for women? This seems to be a tough answer to find... I've got a decent (~$300) black one-button pantsuit. The pants are semi-skinny, kind of Hepburn. Is that too daring? Does button count matter for women?

You may want to visit your high end department store and request the attire consultant that you are interested in a conservative professional interview attire.

Good luck.

Good idea! Thanks!

Stupid question guys: do you include the essay prompt inside the document?

This is what is required so far:
Formatting suggestions: 12 pt. font, Times New Roman, single spacing. Please observe the 400 word limit for each essay.

Yes, they print out your whole app (when you're finished with your app, applyyourself let's you see it in pdf form, you'll see why). The way it comes out you def need the prompts at the beginning of your essays.

What is an "essay prompt"?

Regarding the word limit, and I have heard this directly from an admissions committee member and a student essay reviewer, Cornell Johnson does not count words in the essays. Additionally, going over few words will not go against you BUT "going over 500 will make us wonder whether you can follow directions". I would not go over 450 words and certainly not over 500.

guys..have an interview on campus on the 14th.

usually black charcoal suit or a dark navy blue or gray suit may be order of the day in business circles and probably everybody might be sticking to that for interviewing...
i was wondering if wearing a brown english tweed suit is violating the so called "b-school" interview norms, essentially shouild i dare wearing it or should i stick to the official business school/corporate culture attire? also incase the verdict is that i need to buy a suit which one would u guys recommend? (2 vs 3 button), brand etc.

thanks a lot.

tarun

I don't know how a "brown english tweed suit" looks like. But I highly recommend you get a QUALITY (usually over $500) two button (3 buttons are VERY out of fashion and DO NOT buy them even if they are on sale) charcoal grey, black, or navy suit that fits (meaning not too big) you well. Once you become a student, you will need at least one quality interview suit anyhow. So consider it to be an investment.

As I have previously posted on this very issue, I think it is very important to LOOK like you are a 100K+/yr MBA graduate. Even if you make nowhere near as much and you haven't even started your MBA yet, you don't want to LOOK like a 50K/yr grunt who is not ready for MBA recruiting primetime.

As far as brand, the quality of the suit will speak for itself. Remember, the fabric and fit (and in this case color) are the most important. Also get a conservative looking suit. Do not get pinstripes (unless you are a good judge of suits). I personally prefer conservative Hugo Boss (HB also makes non-conservative suits which you should stay away) because it fits me really well, but you might be of different build. Joseph Abboud tends to be conservative and usually made of quality fabric.

italian applicants with their nice shoes and nice suits are then very advantaged :) It's unfair don't you think so :D

Haha..check out a book called "Looks: Why They Matter More Than You Ever Imagined". It simply states that looks matter a GREAT deal in this world. Better looking people get better jobs, better pay, more promotions, better court outcomes, better teaching, and not to mention more desirable partners. Better looking people are even better loved by their parents.

The world, even the MBA ADCOM, likes good looking people. So yes, looking not so best would put anyone at a disadvantage.

Furthermore, I think it is very important to show in an MBA interview that one understands and is willing to follow unwritten business rules. A person who does not wear a proper professional attire to an MBA interview indicates either he/she is clueless about business interviews or is too rebellious to follow unwritten business rules.

It is critical to LOOK the part that you are interviewing. If you are interviewing for a CEO position, it is quite important to LOOK like a CEO. If you are interviewing at a top B-School such as Johnson, then it is important to look like a typical Johnson grad making over 100K+/yr with a reputable company.

Wow, I can't wait to go How to Dress Like a CEO 101 when I start an MBA. This blog has gotten ridiculous! Really? Looks matter? I need to read a book to know that?

Don't worry so much about what you're gonna wear. Wear what makes you comfortable (within reason). If someone doesn't feel comfortable in a 2,000 dollar suit, it will show.

Your sarcasm is more correct than you think. You will take some interview seminars that will teach you how to dress. You can't wait for it? I bet.

Ridiculous? The only thing that approaches that is your anti-intellectualism that puts down researches on looks and its impact. If you can't appreciate such intellectualism, then why even get an education? Just stick to your intuition, which I am sure is always right.

$2000 is little high for an interview suit (unless you are interviewing for a C level position). So I do not recommend it for an MBA interview.

I totally agree with you Jinjja. looks matters more than many people think. And as I am European, I know it even more!! :)

Yes, Americans think Europeans dress in suits because they are snobs. Although there is some truth to that, Europeans, in my humble opinion, have a more subtle understanding of attire and its importance on how they are perceived. It also affects, rightly or wrongly, one's self image as well.

I just want to help people out in this forum and prevent them from going to a B-School interview, which has been hard-earned, in anything less than a professional attire.

Is anyone else waiting for interview yet? My app went under review on 12/22 and still not heard anything from Johnson. Should interpret it as a ding without interview. Please people if anyone else's app went on or around 12/22 share your status.
