so if i understand correctly, not hearing back after Thanksgiving is a bad sign???

Take this with a grain of salt..

When I scheduled my interview online, I noticed that the last highlighted date to interview was December 13. Now this could mean 1. the system recognizes when I got my invite and only allows me to schedule an interview within X days; 2. the actual date last date to interview on campus is the 13th; 3. Darden adds interview dates as needed; or 4. ????. Note: when I checked Jan/Feb/March/etc. I did not see any dates highlighted for interviews.

Anyways, like I said, take this with a grain of salt. I just wanted to relay what information I saw online to those of you who are still waiting. Your guess is as good as mine as to when they will really stop sending out invites, but keep your head up and good luck.

#1 and #3 are definitely true. #2 could be true, too, though.
I was invited November 1, and the latest I was able to schedule my interview for was November 19.

Any guesses by when international students should expect to hear for a probable telephonic interview ( reasonably odd location), if at all. Do they send official ding letters ?

I'm not sure when you should hear about an interview but the last several years Darden releases all decisions the week of their communication date. They will call (for the most part) all admits the 2 or 3 days leading up to the communication date. If you do not get a phone call, you will get an email indicating ding or waitlist. There may be a slightly different process for international applicants but I believe the timing is the same.

Best of luck

Hi all,

I know R1 candidates are waiting for results but meanwhile could you also help me with 2nd essay question of darden, "A global event that has changed your leadership style". I just can't think of a global event other than recession or Chile mine disaster. Recession seems to be way to general and Chile mine disaster is too recent. Any ideas ??

The question is asking particularly about how the event changed *you*. I talked about the recession, and I wouldn't be surprised if the vast majority of candidates talked about it as well -- I got an interview invitation (R1). I don't think it's a cop-out, as the recession affected everyone in very different ways.
The Chilean mine disaster didn't have much of an effect on me. If it did for you, then go for it! I don't know about other world events. Recession seems easiest.

Yes, exactly. None of us can really tell you what event because it needs to be something that relates to you. I chose not to use the recession because I wrote about it last year but instead used politics in a country(not USA) that I follow very closely and related that to my own leadership positions.

I guess if you are looking for ideas I would say think about what leadership positions you have had, and think of how any of them may relate to some of the world events over the last few years.

Darden's essay's are short, but I would say they ask some of the toughest questions. I think spending time brain storming for a few days will be the best way to figure out what to write about.

mackd,

i wrote about the surge in iraq where i led a platoon against Sunni insurgent strongholdsfrom 2007-2009 , lots of military applicants to Darden so we will usually chose deployments, i know most outside the military may leave these out since our country is the way it is with a tiny military (<1% population)

i think, depnding on your interets, events such as the Haiti disaster and relief efforts if you had any role from donating money to raising awarness etc, could show how you care about things bigger than yourself, how you used available business skills to respond

i think ethics/values will be a major point of emphasis, especially for Darden. But like others have said, as long as you are specific i think the recession can be good, i think it would only be dangerous if it did not answer the question about your view of leadership

good luck, im in for Rd 2 as well,
ryan

I wrote about the financial crisis, and gave a quick paragraph on it and then quickly narrowed the scope down to how it affected me (going through a large merger, changing environment, etc etc). I then talked about how the experience changed my view of leadership and then ended with how I applied what I learned.

I think the key here is to pick something that you can relate to, regardless how common it might be. Most people have been effected by some aspect of the recession (financial, foreclosure, unemployment, etc). Darden's very interested in "your story" so as long as you bring it back to that, you'll be fine. Just make sure to relate it back to you. If you have an interest/experience in public relations or the environment, the BP oil spill might be a good one. If you have disaster relief or fundraising/charity interest/experience, the Haiti earthquake would work well. If you have interest in Wall Street, there's plenty of cases (like Goldman or Lehman) to discuss (remember to relate it back to how it impacted the world).

Hope this helps!

When they say a 'global' event, I understood it as global to Darden. It appears you think that a Greek cannot write about the Greek debt crisis. I hope I am not wrong as I chose a significant event in my country and explained how it can have global significance and how it has affected my long-term plans. :problem:

I don't think that's what those guys were saying. The Greek debt crisis most definitely had global implications. I think you should mostly avoid local stories about cats in trees or town hall disputes. The focus here should not be on the event but on how it relates to your story. Darden does not give you much room to present yourself. Frankly, I think that it is a little presumptous of Darden to think that everyone's view of leadership has been significantly affected by a global event that has occured in the last two years. Be willing to think outside the box to get your story across.

I transitioned to healthcare from banking two years ago. My essay was about the BP oil spill and lack of focus on employee and environmental safety. This event helped me understand why the leaders in my company prioritized safety. I have no interest in energy but I used the BP leadership example to highlight what I have learned about ethics and corporate responsibility. I also set the context for the story by describing my interactions with our executives thus alluding to my responsibilities without discussing them directly. I got an interview so I guess they didn't hate it.

Good luck!

IMO...This essay does not require a discussion of a global event. It requires how your understanding of leadership evolved in past coupla years. If Haiti, Chile, Greek, recession, BP oil spill did not affect your views on leadership then there is no point in discussing about it. I wrote something that was not truly global but was an international experience for me and how it impacted my views on leadership.

i tried to not cover anything that will be over discussed like bp, financial collapse etc. I talked about an entertainment global impact that ties to my goals.

Thought I should post to help future prospectives while visiting Darden,
Keep Change handy for tolls coming out of IAD.

At 12:30 am I found my self in a toll both which just had a basket and took 75c in change.
I only had notes on me and could neither move back or forward. In the middle of the road I began waving my dollar bill until someone pulled to the side and gave me some change.

Moral: Keep change while visiting IAD.

Interview itself was great, adcom interview couldnt read much and took 55 mins. only question was tell me your story etc.
