Yup, I'm serious. I had my interview with a member of the admissions committee. I asked her when I should here back and she said depends on where I ranked them. She then asked me where I ranked the school but before I could answer, she said don't worry about it because she would check when we got off the phone. It was a wonderful conversational interview, but that last bit through me off.
So, I don't normally voice too much of an opinion on here, but since I am not too concerned about the rankings one way or the other, I thought I would throw in my 2 cents on the subject. I am in no way an expert, but the way I logically see this whole thing:
Say, for example, that you ranked Tuck 4th. You have a strong application, strong enough that they are willing to offer you a spot in their class. Overall, it is safe to say that Tuck is a really good school and doesn't just accept anyone, therefore it would be safe to assume at least 1 or 2 of the 3 schools you ranked ahead of Tuck also accept you. At this point, the only issue is the fellowship and if 2 of the 3 other schools accepted you, then the odds of Tuck getting the chance to offer the fellowship to you are pretty slim. So in reality, if that is the case, then there is really no reason to fast-track your application in order to meet the deadline.
Now say they HAD to get you an answer by the deadline, but didn't have the capacity to review your application. If they see that you ranked them 4th, then the easiest thing to do would be to waitlist you since the odds of getting you the fellowship are slim anyway, then you would leave them alone and they can focus on your application when they have the time.
I am not saying this is the case and I am not saying I agree with it. Like everyone else, I am trying to make sense of this whole process and this is the theory I came up with. The only way I would really be disappointed with this process (and perhaps wish I would have just applied to the schools directly) is if I ranked a school 1 or 2 and wasn't offered admission until after the fellowship deadline.
I heard from somewhere, can't remember where, that one of the more popular schools said that if you don't rank them 1st or 2nd then a fellowship won't be offered. I can't remember which one but I know it was one of the top schools.
