There are many benefits to timing your practice, including:
They mentioned in chat that they would have the interview decision by mid/late December.
It looks like I might end up getting pushed to R2. My second recommender won't get his letter in until later today

I would say you still submit your application. I'm not adcom and this may well be wrong - but i think it's two separate processes to submit your own parts and your recommendations. Or call MIT now to find out.
Yeah, I already submitted last night. Being considered in R1 or R2 doesn't really matter too much to me, unless R1 really is considerably easier. Even if I were to get in R1, I wouldn't know before R2 deadlines for any other schools, so it doesn't really affect any R2 plans. I'll probably just confirm with adcom what round I get placed in once my recommender submits.

Managed to submit my part of the application in time for R1. Though one of my recommenders submitted his reco 5 hrs post deadline. Hope they count me in for R1
I spoke to the adcom office and was told late recommenders on an otherwise submitted application will get considered for R1, but they won't guarantee you will hear for sure by the notification deadline. They will of course endeavour to make that deadline but no promises.
So hopefully a couple hours late on the reco isn't a huge deal. Better than getting included with R2 apps.
I don't know about way before. Looking at last year's thread, the few people that got invites may have gotten them a little earlier than the massive rejections. Some people didn't get any update, and got invited in last december or early january.
So I looked at the last year trend....and my conclusions are:
1. They have a very low acceptance...many smart people are rejected... 2. First interview invites will start coming at arnd after 8th Dec. 3. By mid December (15th-20th) many will also get a reject... 4. Status changes mean nothing...dumb app websites...
So no point refreshing before 8th...shud work on R2 applications...or R1 interviews...
