I am a MARGINAL AT BEST candidate who will be applying for LGO round on 12/15. I am no expert but please trust me on this

MIT DOES NOT CARE ABOUT YOUR GOALS!!! (at least in the cover letter) and don't talk about why MIT and what MIT can offer you.

I covered my goal in the cover letter in ONE sentence. I guess I am lucky because one of the LGO specific essay did ask about why LGO and career plan so I talked about my goals in that essay....

I met with a Sloan adcom last winter and must say her comments somewhat contradict this thinking. I agree that Sloan discourages you from reciting the career goals essay. They acknowledge the high percentage of MBA students who change career paths after enrollment and don't want you to enter the program wearing blinders. They love the entrepreneurial nature of Sloan and its ability to change you, your goals, etc.

However, discussing why an MBA and why Sloan is not the same as discussing your goals. I was told to address the cover letter as if it were a professional cover letter. In a professional cover letter, I would certianly tell the prospective employer why I wanted to work there; thus I told Sloan why I want to attend there. Seems logical to me, but I haven't heard anything since I submitted a month and a half ago, so what do I know? :?

When I attended the Info Session, Julie Strong said "Please do not tell us Why Sloan. We know that you all go to the website, talk to students, do your homework, we don't want to read about us, we want to read about you"

And she also mentioned that they knew that pretty much every applicant stated in his/her application that xx school was a dream school, so they knew it was just BS...

my 2 cents

Here's an excerpt from a Jan chat transcript:

Suresh tata (Jan 5, 2009 12:13:14 PM)
Julie: Another related question regarding the content of the cover letter: Apart from illustrating few of my significant accomplishments, what else would you expect us to cover? Just wanted to know if you are specifically expecting to see any of the following in the cover letter. A) How I can contribute to MIT community? B) Short term and Long term Career goals C) Why MBA? D) Why MIT? (FIT w/ career goals and learning style etc). Any advice in this regard will be helpful.

JulieStrongMIT (Jan 5, 2009 12:16:09 PM)
Suresh, we're most interested in the impact which will probably relate to your work. The cover letter is your marketing piece. It is the first thing that we will read. There is a word limit of 500 words so you will want to organize it in a way to let us know your goals and how they relate to what MIT might offer, but don't spend time telling us about individual classes.

Obviously, this pertains to last year's app. Does someone have the 2008 cover letter prompt? I find all these statements from the adcom quite contradictory and confusing.

I'm actually relieved - it's better that ADCOM sends out the dings in early Dec. Waiting till mid Jan to eventually realize that an interview invite is not going to come is much more difficult.

For what it's worth, I say ding day will be tomorrow.

I would actually prefer that they told us after I've finished and submitted all my other applications.

Hi All,
Is there anyone from Europe who received an interview invite. I'm really getting nervous to find out whether invites for my location have already been sent out...

Good luck to all of those waiting like me and congrats to those who already got an invite!

Looks like it has been really really quiet after the first 3 or 4 invites that showed up last week...I have been talking with people in Argentina and nothing here yet...so I don't know...

Hi - found this thread from the BW forums. I'm an MIT R1 applicant, submitted on 10/27. I received an invite on 12/8 to interview in Washington, DC.

I"ve applied for MIT R1 MBA. Waiting for Interview...

Some one was prompting about Latam. Yes. I live in Argentina (but an international applicant from India)...

i'm not counting the chickens before they hatch - if MIT invites me for an interview and the venue is anywhere except argentina, i have to apply for visa too <sigh>... the AdCom refused to talk even about the venue of Interview in LatAm...

I had a conversation with somebody from the Adcom at Sloan and they mentioned that the venue will be Buenos Aires for R1. It has been that way for years so far.

Something got REALLY FU$#$ UP. Today when I was trying to access my account at the online application system I couln't do it. I went to retrieve my password and the freaking system is telling me that my PIN doesn't exists. I'm a Round 1 applier so you can imagine how freaking nervous I've become.

I created a ticket at the system and sent an email to the adcom to let them know my situation, wishing that this freaking situation doesn't get into my chances of getting an interview. Has anyone else got in a situation like this one??

Thanks for your help

I can't stand the wait any longer. If it goes down like last year, emails would go out around 7pm tonight (unless anyone knows different). This is going to be the longest Monday ever.

In the call last week they said that at least it wouldn't be the same date as last year...also, there are some regions that have not heard about MIT so far...

If I am to get dinged, please I just want to get the ding after another acceptance later this week...too much with the more than likely ding from Stanford...
