Someone on the BW forum mentioned that there will be no "Ding Day" like there was last year or that at least it won't be Dec 15th. They cited the source as an adcom member on the web chat today. Anyone have any color on this?

I am actually really hoping this is incorrect! I was kind of counting on Ding day. It was going to be my watershed moment as to whether or not I pursue another career path that has opened for me right now.......

This messes with my plans severely!

Agreed. Maybe the ADCOM was just referring to 12/15 as the date. haha, maybe it will be today. Either way, I'd like to know ASAP.

(From the chat) This gives me hope:

JenBarba: we're still inviting people to interviews. only the very first batch have gone out.
...
JenBarba: round 1 invites have not all been sent out yet. we are just beginning to invite r1 apps, and invites will continue to go out throughout the end of january

Please, no one crush my dreams by telling me that the "very first batch" equals "everyone from your hub city!"

Ha, we were in the same I-M chat breakdown. I was trying to follow all 3 chat rooms, chaos I tell you, and did see a question by yiuqiu18 along the lines of "when are the early DINGS going out, they went out on Dec. 15th last year". I remember seeing Kim give a guarded response like "it won't be the same day", but it seemed they didn't really want to address the topic.

By the way, I'm a Rd 1 submit and am here to help and share the pain of "MIT INVITES YOU... to an information session" emails as well.

Tidbits from the chats:
"some R1 invites have gone out, but only a few so far. invites will continue to go out until the decision date"
"interviews in Asia will take place in january. intv invites will probably go out early january"
"we're still inviting people to interviews. only the very first batch have gone out. "
"intv's are only conducted by members of the adcom, we do not use alums. we invite about 25% of apps for intv's"
"of the 25% invited to intv, about 13% are ultimately offered admission"
"reapps are very successful, higher acceptance rate for reapps then regular, about 18%"

Regarding the acceptance %s I believe there was a typo there in the original chat that nobody stepped up to correct. There is no way that out of 25%, 13% get acceptance, that would drive a 4.2% admissions rate...In a different room, Angel Navedo said that out of those that they invite, they accept between 50 and 70%

I believe she means 13% of all applicants, so 13%/25% is roughly 50% of folks invited

"qiulin18:
when will sloan start to send out early DING emails to 1st round applicants who are rejected without an interview? It was Dec 15 last year
AdmissionsKim: qiulin18- No not on the same day."

"AdmissionsKim: Everyone- We are not releasing the dates for interviews. You will definatly know on Feb 1 you status."
(From Transcript 3)

Unless the BW fellow was referring to a different set of responses, doesn't seem one could definitively claim "they aren't sending out early Dings this year".

Agreed. They'll probably send out dings next week. I think they just didn't want to provide an exact date.

I'm actually relieved - it's better that ADCOM sends out the dings in early Dec. Waiting till mid Jan to eventually realize that an interview invite is not going to come is much more difficult.

For what it's worth, I say ding day will be tomorrow.

I know there is not a lot of value in dragging up concerns over submitted essays, but this exchange in the chat really unnerved me:

TJ_india: jen:
is there a reason why mit does not ask the career goals essay? is the
cover letter expected to have it or is it becuase career goals are
speculative and hence less imp?

JenBarba: tj:
because we don't really believe what you tell us when you talk about
your goals, so why spend time analyzing something we know will change
once you get here :-). all of our questions are evidence based
questions, asking only about your past experiences.

TJ_india: but in the cover letter u want to know why mit and why mba right?
n isn't the goal supposed to answer that question?

JenBarba: tj; no we dont ask the goal question.
JenBarba: cover letter (up to 500 words) seeking a place in the MIT Sloan MBA Program. Describe your accomplishments and include an example of how you had an
impact on a group or organization. Your letter should conform to
standard business correspondence and be addressed to Mr. Rod Garcia,
Director of MBA Admissions

TJ_india: so
do u suggest not mention the goal at all in the cover letter? so sorry
to bug u, just need to b sure...seems like mit takes people based on
proved competence

then no response from Jenbarba

Guess who mentioned his goals in the cover letter............this guy!

I can feel the ding already.....

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I would be surprised that none of the admits mention their goals in their cover letter. If anything, it's just that goal doesn't matter as much to MIT. Is it gonna kill your app, probably not.
