Think about it from the other perspective, if you are sitting in class (and often times people know the answer and just dont raise their hand for whatever reason) you dont want to be the know it all that is 'showing' people up. Nobody likes a know it all and nobody wants to be in school with them. No matter what you say you will not impress people with how smart you are or what you know, you arent matt damon in Good Will Hunting. No matter how correct or insightful your answer is, at best you will be seen as trying to show people up, at worst you will be wrong and be seen as a joke. If the professor says studnets and visitors what do you have to say it is a courtesy not an actual invitation, unless it is specifically addressed to you (which should never happen). I would observe, not participate, it isnt your class its theirs. Class visits are one of those times when it is best not to remembered, nothing positive will come of being remembered. At least thats my two cents.

calihopeful - i assume you sat in on Security Analysis. That class is the only one i know of where the prof asks visitors to participate. I think its ok to participate when the Prof asks you to but even then limit your participation to one comment. In general, do not answer questions unless explicitly asked to do so.

It wasn't that class - but still the prof asked visitors to participate. I guess I should have thought about my actions a little more carefully first, but alas, i raised my hand for a one-line response (as did another visitor in that class). Trying not to freak out too much considering I can't do anything about it at this point. gonna be a long painful wait till dec. 16th. womp womp.

I don't think it's anything to be worried about, especially if it was just a one-line response and other visitors answered too. I got called out by a student during AV issues in class at Berkeley... "Perhaps the visitor can tell us about his background and why he's interested in Haas" *expectant looks from everyone* :?

ounce, cyber1,

FYI. . .I just received a very nice email from another institution saying that because of the waitlist last year and because of a positive interview, the app bypassed that interview decision process and went to review. They mentioned that the interview really wasn't necessary, but was available to me if I wanted to schedule one. Perhaps YSOM is of a similar mindset with Reapplicants with a fairly positive first application (as it sounds like both of yours were).

Here's hoping, keep the faith, cheers!

Here at Yale! Taking the full-on tour today, and the coffee session with a second year. If any other GMATClubbers are here, I would love to hang out. After the tour my evening is open, and I'll be here Friday for most of the day too.

So, not there, but New Haven is a great town, not sure if this is your style, but there is a place just off the green called The Owl Shop, it's a cigar bar and lounge with big leather chairs and plasmas - pretty awesome. There's great restaurants around there too, check it out!

I have an unusual question and would like your perspective - obviously I think none of us would really know the answer but what do you think -
How much dedication should a person show at the interview to a particular school? I am really in love with YSOM, I have in-depth knowledge about the curriculum (I have chosen which electives I would want to take), the professors (reading their books and publications), the clubs (chosen the clubs I want to participate in, researched, learned a lot about their current activities), the companies that recruit there (again looked at some that I would like to do my internship at) met a lot of students who are very active, etc.
I am concerned that if I show my love too much at my interview I may be waitlisted on the basis that I am definitely willing to wait it out, do you think that's a factor in the admit/waitlist decision?
Thanks for any input!

My two cents, for what they're worth, be yourself, have a conversation and your enthusiasm and knowledge will come forward naturally. Trying to force things tends to backfire, but that's just my perspective.

To the second point, I can't imagine them waitlisting you with hopes to pick you up on the back-end - I know there is a lot of strategy being played by both ends to obtain good statistics, etc. but that seems like a bit of a stretch.

Thanks, I sensed I may be game theorizing this a little too much, but I guess I needed someone to confirm.

Your enthusiasm will likely be obvious if it is genuine (I hope mine was anyway).

720 and 3.5 - They have your applicaton, liked it enough to want to see more, and know that you probably put together a similar level application for other top schools. Its risky to play the WL game with you.

A general question guys: is it the case the the Adcoms have a pretty good sense of the admit pile prior to the interview process plays itself out, and that barring any major interview screw ups, they know who they're letting in?

My guess is that there students that are pretty much in barring a screw up and then some maybes where an interview may make more of a difference. So, I guess the answer to your question is "yes"

My interview invite was soon after submission, so I doubt there was any "admit" pile going at that point. If someone further down the app pile with my background and better experiences comes up, it's not like I have an advantage because I already interviewed. Last year there was 60something% accepted after interview, which is a large % of interviewed and dinged. They mentioned they are trying to interview more this year, so that % is going to go down.
