Great news! A spot opened up for next week. Will be a bit tricky flying from my Chicago client to Boston and then making the trek up to Hanover, but it will be worth it. I also get to fly JetBlue for the first time (I'm a Delta gal)
Don't underestimate the drive from Boston. For my first visit last month, I went DFW-ATL-BOS on a late flight and got to Hanover around 3AM after driving through remote wilderness, only to fly back to DCA next day. Needed a lot of caffeine.
For my actual interview in couple of weeks it will probably be LGA-BOS-ATL-MDW. Refuse to fly anything but Delta.

"Remote Wilderness" couldn't be more true. I was driving at night and for a good hour it was just pitch black around me. No streetlight, no other cars, nothing but me and the Moose Crossing signs.

Also, my cell service kept going in and out through that stretch.

My plan is to stay near Logan and then trek up in the wee hours of the AM. Is that nuts?

Better off going the night before. It's just a lot of driving if you are coming back same evening (Boston traffic picks up right around 4-5PM when you'd get back). There are bunch of Category 3 and 4 Marriott properties within 5 miles. Take advantage of those points. I just prefer driving at night, less hassle.

Hmm... I won't land at BOS until 9:30... would make for a late night.
Ok, I've booked an SPG property near logan and a Marriott near Tuck. I'll decide later.

@abacab - are you by chance a road warrior like me? your command of airport codes is impressive, lol.

Yeah, Consultant who refuse to be local and based out of ATL. I got in BOS around 12AM, you should be fine at 9PM.

Is there anyone working on the scholarship essay?

The prompt is a short bibliography essay. I am wondering whether this will be considered separately from or together with the other application essays? Should I repeat what I have mentioned in the other applications essays? Basically, they are quite thorough and covered everything that I wanted to convey to the Admission Committee.

The scholarship essay is quite short for a comprehensive bibliography. So what should I focus on? My background, my undergraduate study, or my work experience?

Thanks for any recommendation as this essay is due on 11th.

This question came up during my visit with an admissions person. The people that evaluate the scholarship essays DO NOT see your application. They are completely separate processes. As for what to write...not sure I can help you there...I still have to write mine!

Any one heading up to Tuck for an interview around the 23rd? I got one on the 23rd and would be nice to meet some GC alums before hand for a few beers. Havent decided yet if I'm going to rent car in BOS or take the Dartmouth shuttle.

Cheers

Did i just read that if you haven't initiated an interview on campus you're looked at unfavorably? Thats the first i'm hearing of it......I applied R2 to Tuck and did not initiate an interview,...but due to various work and family issues i simply couldn't have. I don't see how its fair to penalize me for not taking advantage of something thats billed as "optional". Somebody please clarify this,...I can see giving applicants who initiated an interview a slight boost,...but taking points away,..so to speak,..to people who didn't initiate an interview seems unfair.

I don't think the adcoms have ever mentioned that it is a "disadvantage" if you dont initiate, especially if you are from the NE. There is also an option where you could explain your reason for not being able to make it so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Not everyone makes it so just address the issue in the optional essay.

Not everyone makes it so just address the issue in the optional essay.

Firstly, I already submitted the app.

Secondly, I had other issues to discuss in my optional anyway.

Finally, I may have considered if I had known its such a big issue. I don't mean to sound whiny, but I just thinks it is false advertising to make something optional, but in reality treat it like its mandatory. If its that important to visit they should make it mandatory and be done with it. I would not have wasted money or time if I had known that not visiting Tuck would get me dinged.

This may come off as callous, but there are a lot of videos, interview transcripts with adcoms and even the Tuck blog reiterates if you are within the US they are basically expecting a visit. Some basic research probably would have led you to this conclusion.

And I disagree with the contention that it's 'unfair'. Each school has a unique selection process and Tuck is making a substantial investment in potential students... what other Top Tier school allows candidates to initiate interviews? They want to know you aren't just applying because they are ranked high... they want to know you want to be in the middle of nowhere for 2 years and you're going to be a good fit with potential classmates.

I understand the work and family bit; but you still have time to visit if you really want to go to school there. The adcoms are very reasonable and will do their best to accommodate if you explain your situation.

Batman: that's fantastic, let's definitely catch up for dinner and beers then. Would be great to meet other potential applicants. Hopefully we will run into some Tuckies at the bar and hear about their experiences as well.

Mooze: I have spoken to several "experts" and I concur with TheSenator. Unless you live outside the US (in which case a visit would add greater value) or you are a noble prize winner, Tuck expects you to schedule an interview.

Brownidentity and Batman, I'm interviewing on 23rd as well ... but have a pretty tight schedule ... late night flight into Boston and afternoon flight back home the next day. Will catch up at the interview or afterwards.
