Dear folks,

This questions address to all folks from Boston area, especially to female ones! (males' response accepted as well)

WHAT DO HUSBANDS OF FEMALE MBA STUDENTS DO IN BOSTON?

I'm posting this for my husband, while trying to convince him to come to the U.S. with me if I get admitted to HBS. We're now based in Europe.

Here are some of his "preference" and profile:

First of all, Boston area is greatly preferred, otherwise he doesn't see interests to move in if we're still seperated by 4 hours Bus between Boston and NYC for example.

He currently has a high position for the Ministry of Finance and Industry - reason why the convincing work is not easy. His interest is in the industrial sectors, potentially open for banks (more Project Financing than Pure trading and quant), but definitely no consulting.

I don't know where to find information.
Is there any European industrial group in the area? - I say "European" coz I heard that it's hard for foreigners to find a job directly in a US company ...
Are there big banks having HQ, big offices or significant presence in Boston?

I'm just wondering what do hubbies of women MBA students do in Boston?

Thank you so much if any of you could provide some thoughts on that! hbsguru?

Once you get in, HBS has huge resources dedicated to "Partners' of students and they help you with that sort of thing. I know during Admitted Students' Welcome for round 1, partners of students had some side activities geared towards finding jobs in Boston and other kinds of partner activities. But alas, the resources won't be available to you and your partner until you get admitted. Unfortunately, i didn't go to any of those activities, so i have no additional info or specifics.

Thank you for your input nikki4nikki!

I know that there will be such information once accepted. I'm not sure there will be enough information given his specific expectancy (sector, activities, etc.).

What I'm looking for now is just some factual information regarding Boston area, whether there are (european) industrial groups present, what are bank offices in Boston (are they exclusively in NYC?), and what are their business or activities in Boston office?

Anyone knowing well the Boston job market could provide any input?

Dear nikki4nikki, I got another question about the housing. I know that we can either be selected by lottery to get a room in the on-campus dorm, or pick up some nearby apartments. My question is whether it is easy to find a furnitured 2 bedrooms, if yes, on-campus and/or off-campus? what's roughly the surplus compared to an unfurnitured one?

Thanks you!

Most (if not all) of the dorms are furnished. But the on-campus and off-campus apartments are mostly unfurnished, but you can find a few furnished ones (but not that many).

I know the 2 on-campus apartments (Soldiers Field Park & One Western Ave) are unfurnished.

Out of the total 62 apartment buildings owned by Harvard Housing, Only the 6 below have some furnished apartments (Note: except for Soldiers Field Park and One Western Ave, all the other apartments are considered off-campus)

- 10 Akron Street
- Harvard@Trilogy
- 1306 Massachusetts Avenue
- 4-6 Mount Auburn Street
- 65 Mount Auburn Street
- Peabody Terrace

Hope this helps!

Btw, out of the 6 listed - 10 Akron and 4-6 Mt Auburn do not have a 2-bedroom option.

Thank you nikki4nikki, that's crystal clear!

Q1: Are the 6 off-campus residences you listed at walk distance to the HBS campus?
Q2: Any idea of how big a rental difference between furnitured and unfurnitured apartments (1 or 2 bedroom)?
Q3: If I was to come with my 16 month baby and to rent an unfurnitured apart, I'll have to buy furnitures and sell them 2 years later, that kinda sucks. I don't know whether there are HBS students actually doing this?

Do a lot of students move furniture from home to their dorms/apartments? I've got a fully furnished house, and wouldn't mind having some of the comforts of home while in a new city.

Nikki, are you close to Boston? I'm coming from Minneapolis and I'm debating whether to pay to ship my furniture all the way across country vs. just buying new stuff.

So I think it'll probably help you better to check out their website (click on the rent ranges link for more info o rent):
https://www.huhousing.harvard.edu/Prospe ... index.aspx

I checked on the website and the walking time estimates to the Business School are:
10 Akron - 10 mins
65 Mt Auburn - 11 mins
Peabody - 12 mins
1306 Mass - 12 mins
4-6 Mt Auburn - 13 mins
Harvard@Trilogy - 42 mins

For question 3, some people do that because some prior students are generally looking to get rid of their furniture, so some incoming students choose to do that instead of buying brand new furniture.

Once you get accepted, you'll get access to the HBS 'craiglist' (it's not really called HBS craiglist, but you get the gist) where you can see all the different kinds of furniture that students have for sale.

No not close to boston, I'll be shipping my stuff from the midwest and the 1st estimate I got for pack and ship was about $2000-3500. But I think I can get it cheaper, so I'm still looking at some different shipping companies

Got it. I'll have to price out some shipping companies as well at some point. Shipping a car over is gonna be expensive as well but I'd really prefer not to do a 26 hour drive. :)

HBS guru et al,

Does HBS announce on the last date, or do they start announcing before hand? I finally got into another school and want to know how long the waiting agony will go on for...

Thanks

According to my interviewer, everyone will get an email to access the decision around noon on March 29th.

THAT IS PRETTY MUCH THE DRILL IN YEARS PAST. SOMETIMES EMAILS COME OUT EARLIER (I THINK 9AM OR SO TWO YEARS AGO 2ND ROUND), DEPENDING ON HOW UP ON THEIR GAME HRH LEOPOLD AND THE FAIRY PRINCESSES ARE--BUT COUNT ON NOON OR SO. NERVE-RACKING, FER SURE.
