HER MAJESTY GIVES A 2+2 TALK AT HARVARD COLLEGE--NOTES FROM A FRIEND WHO WAS THERE

below are some notes taken at Dee Leopold's recent gabfest for Harvard College kids interested in 2+2:

Quote:

Here's some notes I took from Dee's presentation. Not sure how much of it is new:

*820 applicants to 2+2 last year, 200 granted interviews, 100 offers given
*out of those 100, approximately >50 were from science/engineering, the other 50 were "everything else"
*not set in stone, but they're hoping not to waitlist anyone through the 2+2 process (i.e., if you apply by the first deadline, you're not going to be waitlisted and pushed off into the later cycles)
*if you apply for the first deadline, interviews must be on campus and during designated week in August. no exceptions.
*3rd year (even 4th year) deferrals OK
*if you are granted an interview and are subsequently denied, they will provide feedback

She made it clear that rounds 2, 3, and 4 still fall under the "2+2" program. She, however, didn't specify how many kids they plan to take per round.

Last year, they took about 100 kids in the early 2+2 program and then sorta 50 college seniors. This year, the early program and the senior admit pool is being rolled into one big new 2+2. Whether it will take 150 kids, and whether it will take 100 in the 'early' round and fifty over the next rounds, dunno.
Perchance if her majesty --or any of her handmaidens --are reading this, they could clarify--BIG QUESTION b.c. lots of kids are calling me and saying the want to apply early round b.c. it takes more kids.

It really sucks to not know. I don't know why, but I just have this antsy feeling its going to be more seniors this time. Sigh.

TIDBITS FROM THE PALACE, NEW HBS APP WILL BE OUT SORTA MID MAY. AND WHILE YOU ARE BEING SO GABBY, MY DEAR, HOWZ ABOUT SOME INFO ABOUT 2+2 NUMBERS, TO WIT

1.WILL NEW COMBINED PROGRAM SORTA TAKE 150 KIDS
2. WILL 100 OF THOSE KIDS BE ADMITTED IN EARLY ROUND

OR YOU DUNNO YOUR LOVELY SELF ????

Date: April 21, 2011
I see that some of you are wondering why you can't access your Round 3 application via ApplyYourself right now.

No, this doesn't signify ANYTHING - really - other than that we are currently getting ready to go live with the Class of 2014 application and need to take down the Class of 2013 one so we can fiddle freely. No one's application has been lost or misplaced or anything remotely like that. We're hoping to get the Class of 2014 application up in mid-May - but are paying careful attention to everyone in Round 3.

Hope this helps,
Dee

Sandy,

Thanks for the info. Question for you. If you are now on the waitlist, what do you think about re-applying for first round this fall? Would you need to significantly improve your GMAT / application for it to be worthwhile? Or would the fact that round 1 is slightly less competitive than round 2, plus some marginal improvements in your application make it worth a shot? What's your take, anyone?

Thanks and good luck to Round 3 folks.

I was at a 2+2 info session and they plan to take roughly the same number of students in each round and they were specific in saying that it doesn't matter in what round you apply in !!

thanks, if you dont mind, who said that and when.
not sure if that is accurate, their best guess, or pre-fabricated and fuzzy sound bite, or all of the above.
At first blush, they will cert. NOT take same number of kids in each round, if they get 600+ apps in early round (as they did for 2+2) last year, unless they plan to put whole lotta kids on WL.
On the other hand, last round is traditionally popular w. college seniors, so maybe that will be their practice.
150 admits over 4 rounds = ~35 per round. But that would be real come down fr. early round last year (100+), soooo guess we will just see. It seems they pushed the program much harder last year vs this spring (for early round) and may be planning to do more campus visits, etc. in fall, to boost apps. in later rounds.

Has anyone heard of any waitlist activity lately? If more WL'ers are going to be accepted, I'm guessing most of it is going to be between now and next Thursday. We're probably going to get another e-mail from Eileen this Friday or next Monday so if anything maybe we'll hear then?

improving gmat will only help if original score was low-ish (e.g below 80pct in either Q or V, esp, Q); jackng up a 730 to 750 wont help you ONE BIT.

as to other stuff: It's advisible to add some new stuff, just for form's sake, and go thru old app. to see if stories etc. can be improved. Assuming you were R1 or R2 last year --that means your old
'story' stopped in early Oct or early Jan, and new app will be handed in sorta one year later, sooooo, they expect stuff to be a bit different. Diff bet. R1 and R2 not that criitical in terms of timing, e.g. 95 days, so not much going to happen in that window. As to R2 being more competitive, dunno man, maybe in terms of absolute numbers, but R1 is when the golden kids apply.
A good many kids on WL had interview probs. of some kind, that is one thing YOU CAN IMPROVE--duh, via practice or getting mock interview with, ahem, me. https://hbsguru.com/prices.html#4

Emergency question! My interviewer didn't give me business card. I wonder how could i send a thank you note, do i have to??? thanks a lot!

Send it to the generic interview/adcom account ([email protected]) and put Attn: interviewer name in the subject line. The receptionist told me the front desk would forward those emails on to the individual interviewers.

Question for students who've applied for Fall 2011 - I've heard some people refer to R1 for HBS being extremely competitive this past year compared to previous years. Was there a particular reason for this? Is there any reason to R1 of the coming app season will be the same? I'm trying to gauge when the best time to apply would be, and have been planning on R1 all along.

I don't think you should base your application on which round will be more competitive. If you feel you are prepared for R1, then you should apply then. The earlier you submit, the fewer people you are going up against, and the higher your odds of acceptance are. Worst case is you'll get wait-listed and compared against the R2 students. If they would ding you in R1, they'd have dinged you in R2 as well.

Best of luck to you.

I will probably still apply R1. I was just curious. Congrats on your HBS acceptance, BTW.
