Still waiting for my phone call-not sure why its taking so long.. meh :/

Still beaming over the news of my acceptance !! Wow this feels great! In the spirit of the holidays, I'm gonna do a little giving of my own & give a review of the consultant I used: Sandy Kreisberg.

Before I started my app I realized I needed a consultant. I was so far behind the game when compared to the info those at prestigious firms and schools had gotten. I did NOT know how to present myself best to the bschools adcoms.

After calling a bunch of consultant with cheesy lines who all sounded the same (for those people who watch Entourage-it was exactly like when Vince was shopping for a new agent after he fired Ari-just way less glamorous). My call with Sandy was different. At first I told him my stats and my version of the story I would apply with-which he dismissed as mediocre. Instead he had me tell him EVERYTHING I had done since the start of college. The best way to describe him is like a bloodhound-he listened to everything, and sniffed out the stuff which I had assumed as ordinary, but in reality were impressive and the info that needed to be presented to the adcoms.

I came to him with a mess of a story, and left with a solid picture and message. The rest of the process was tailoring this story to make it uber crisp and clear.

He also served as a bit of a stress relief which I really needed. He has his own info and stats of bschool acceptances over the past 10+ years based off his clients and others, and also a significant portion of the applicants who interview at the top school use him, so by interview time he had an even better idea of where I stood. Whenever I worked myself up too much-I shot him an email with a nervous question-and he responded with a solid email outlining where I stood and what I should be expecting going forward.

Another unintended consequence of using his service was the benefit to my job search. I've been applying to jobs for awhile, and even with my impressive experience, I didn't even get a nibble. It wasn't until AFTER we hammered out my story that I started getting callbacks. The criteria these bschools use are similar to the criteria used by the prestigious firms for interviews. I have final round interviews with XXXX, XXXX, XX (edited here) etc. all of which didn't even call me back the year before. No one has noticed this added benefit on the forum but its true and something to think about.

Can you get in without a consultant? Of course. How many other people use em? I would guess ~40-50%. At my HBS interview, about 3 out or every 4 people there had used one-but that is obv a small sample size.

Should you use a consultant? You need to decide that yourself. But considering a lot of people spend upwards of 1000$ on apps alone, and the cost of tuition-the cost of a consultant begins to seem less insane. I had to cut back a little after using his service-but it was all worth it when I got my HBS acceptance letter! My advice to you: if you're going to use a consultant, your best bet without a doubt is with Sandy. If you can only afford to pay for 1 school (like me) have him decide which school he should help you with-and ask him for general advice for the other ones. He was nice enough to give me general advice for my other apps. Book him early-cause he is in high demand and for good reason.

Well thats all from me. Good luck to everyone and happy holidays !!

Last year there had been a lot of upset over the round 1 decisions, with a lot of finance candidates not getting in.  Were there any overwhelming trends this year that anyone can provide further color on?  HBS guru- did most of your "star" candidates seem to get in this year?

Hey guys,
I am extremely late to this party. Trying to finish up my essays for the R2 deadline. Can anyone provide insight on how they addressed their first two essays? I am not sure if I should dive right in explaining the 3 accomplishments and setbacks or do I need to have a formal intro, transition sentences, theme sentences, etc? I have been browsing through the internet and getting mixed answers. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much for your help and happy new year!!

I used headers or mini story titles. They are kind of cheesy but I ultimately went with them instead of labeling a/b/c or trying to figure out some way to weave an intro/transitioning sentences between three really different stories at three very different points in my life. I'm sure if i thought a little bit harder, I could have probably come up with something, but I also viewed those sentences as detracting from precious word count. To your point, I received very mixed feedback from various sources online (essaysnark/precision essay/etc.). To be honest, I'm not sure adcoms care *that* much as they've seen it both ways.

lala10 and dcman321 - thank you so much for your advice. I will probably spare myself the hassle of setting up intros/conclusions. Happy new year and good luck at HBS next year :)

hey
I am a 1st yr student in Delhi College of Engineering(DCE), India.
I have been following this blog for quite some time now and i wanted to know how my getting involved in business related activities such as B-plan formulation, case studies etc in college would affect my chances when I apply in the 2+2 program?
I actually have an opportunity to do an internship in microfinance this summer or apply for a economics/management/leadership course in LSE but seeing as I am a science student and HBS 2+2 doesnt 'target' business course undergraduates, would it prove to be counter-productive to my chances of getting in?
Should i just stick to internships or other research opportunities in my field ?
thanks

I separated my essays with an entire line of dashes...alleviated wasting words in transitions and headers...

This was my first accomplishment...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This was my second....

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This was my third..

Maybe not the best method, but it worked out.

In regards to the titles for each accomplishment and set back, what are your thoughts on whether these count against word count or not? If they count against, I like SandFrog's idea of jut using dashed lines, but would prefer to use some sort of title.

Also, for Essay #4, I'm assuming we should list the question that we are answering first. Does this count against word count since it is not actually part of the answer?

Has anybody been admitted that exceeded the word count due to titles or the question? This is probably a silly question that I am over thinking, but just interested to see what others' perspectives are.

Happy New Years to all and best of luck to those that are tossing their hats in for round 2!

The question doesn't count towards your allocation (unless you do something ridiculous, like a write a paragraph long question). I don't think a title is necessary. You're going to explicitly state your accomplishment/setback in your essay. Regardless of how you feel when writing these essays, it's not a writing competition. I felt the same way. The reality is that it's a story telling competition and generally the story is more important than the execution.

I've heard the 10% fudge factor 'rule' being thrown around and it's probably accurate. My essays were 640/620/403/403 (not including questions). A lot depends on the essay itself. Some 400 word essays feel like 600 and some 600 word essays feel like 400. Most important is content. If you can't cut any more away without taking away from what you did or what you learned and you're within 10%, leave it. I wouldn't do it on every essay but as you can see by my counts above, I wasn't under on any of them. If your essay is well written and the story is compelling, word count isn't as important to a certain degree. I wouldn't sweat it too much if you have to start chopping out key parts your story.

HIGHER GPA FR. TIER 2 SCHOOL???

THIS IS FROM MY ADVICE COLUMN ON POETS AND QUANTS.
https://poetsandquants.com/2011/12/16/as ... nt-page-1/

Thanks for this series – it’s been really helpful. While reading through the profiles, I have been wondering about one thing though:

Is a higher GPA from a lower ranked school better for the applicant than a lower GPA from a higher ranked school? For example, 3.7 from UCLA vs 3.4 from Stanford. Or 3.7 from CSU Northridge vs 3.4 from Stanford.

Thanks, and happy holidays!

=================
hmmmmm, tuff one, esp. the way you set it up. A 4.0 from
Tier 2 school is better than a 3.4 fr. Stanford, esp. if you have resume parts (jobs, gmat) that show you ares diamond in the rough type: HSW always looking for that. A 3.7 fr. Tier 2 school, plus blah jobs and below ~700 gmat aint getting you anyplace. The kids who get into HSW fr. Tier 2 schools, esp. non-minorities, need real solid gpa plus some other WOW item, e.g. great jobs, etc. On the other hand, “average” gpa at H and S is 3.69, so a Stanford gpa of 3.4 would need some explaining, and some real EXTRA push, since that would be in bottom 25 pct of gpa pile, my guess. Sure, trend would count etc (e.g. rising gpa scores)and ‘difficulty’ of courses, etc. I’d say 3.7 from Tier 2 and 3.4 fr. Stanford –well both would have hard time at HSW unless you are talking minority, or powerful X factor. I’d say the non-minority cohort at HSW w. 3.4 or below (from anyplace) is maybe 10-15 pct of class, maybe less, so you gotta ask, e.g. at HBS, how did those 90 -110 kids get in? They had something going, and 90-110 could be overstated.

THERE IS NO RULE BUT THE VAST NUMBER OF ADMITTED STUDENTS (AND THOSE OF DINGED STUDENTS AS WELL) JUST JUMP RIGHT IN. HEADLINES OR TITLES ARE NOT REQUIRED, AND ARE OFTEN NOT HELPFUL, ESP. A TITLE LIKE "TAKING A LEADERSHIP ROLE IN DUE DILIGENCE," --A BETTER EXERCISE IS TO GIVE YOUR STORIES TITLES AND MAKE SURE, IN MOST CASES, THE FIRST SENTENCE MAKES THE NEED FOR THAT TITLE UNNECESSARY. MOST ESSAYS HIDE THE BALL AND SPEND TOO MUCH TIME AND SPACE BUILDING UP TO THE ACTUAL EVENT BEING DISCUSSED --IF YOU FORCE YOURSELF TO SUMMARIZE WHAT HAPPENED IN FIRST SENTENCE, YOU HAVE REST OF ESSAY TO EXPLAIN HOW YOU WERE EFFECTIVE, WHICH IS, IN SHORT, WHAT THEY ARE LOOKING FOR.

Hi folks -

Could use a little guidance from the community - having a 6-day-out from application panic attack. I'm done with the application & essays, but am suddenly wondering whether I should hit the brakes because I'm feeling like I may have a glaring weakness and would rather save my ammo for when I really need it - i.e. freeze my essays and recs, work on my weakness, and then come back with a stronger R1 app next year

Moved to review forums.

Thanks for the advice!

Thanks, sandfrog! Did you decide whether you're matriculating at HBS yet?
