Hmmm... back to round 2 applications? Are R1 decisions made and HBS is just waiting another week to see how R2 looks?

Fun. I guess we'll find out on the 21st (is that the decision date?) what that means :P

I knowingly scheduled a 12pm Eastern dentist appointment for next Wednesday to avoid the ritualistic and inevitable refreshing of the email every 2 seconds ....

Haha! I did the exact same thing! I scheduled a Dr's appointment. My wife and I are going to meet at home to get the news together. (Either way we're excited because an admit is an admit at HBS, while a ding means we're set on Kellogg and heading to Chicago!)

EDIT - Just wondering, does anyone know if HBS does a lot of waitlisting? And if so, what are your chances once on the WL?

Well from Dee's blog:

" I expect that around 100 Round One candidates not yet invited to interview will be asked to join the waitlist on notification day."

That tells me that they only WL candidates not interviewed already. I doubt that their WL is much more than 100 for R1 with a 90% yield.

6 days until decision day! Latest blog entry from Dee:

Round 1 Decision Day
Date: January 15, 2009

Next Wednesday, January 21, is the day we release decisions to all first round applicants. Here's what you can expect:

Some time on Wednesday - most likely before noon - you will receive an email from HBS MBA Admissions indicating that your decision is available. You then log in to your account and there it is.

We don't make phone calls in advance of this. Really. None. Admits will start to receive congratulatory calls later in the day, but notification is always online. So if you're waiting to hear from Harvard, no need to jump when the phone rings or worry when it doesn't.

Applicants invited to join the waitlist on January 21 will receive a follow-up email later in the day on Wednesday from Eileen Chang, waitlist manager. The waitlist will be comprised of a mix of candidates who have been interviewed already and those who haven't.

For those candidates who are not admitted, we are unable to offer personal feedback about your application. Even if we had the staff capacity to do this during the application season, it probably wouldn't be as helpful as you wish. The vast majority of applicants are certainly academically qualified to be here and would bring something interesting to the classroom. The challenge of selection is different from the process of evaluation - in our effort to bring together a diverse and textured class, we make many very tough calls.

I know how difficult it is to wait... but it's not too much longer.

Dee

I suspect most of the R1 WL applicants will be selected from the pool of those already interviewed.

So does this mean that the email itself won't indicate an admit/ding?

I think it'll just say "Your status has been updated online", or something to that effect. I think it's a standard message used by the applyourself outsourcing company.

Yikes.

That seems to go against her earlier blog post saying that ~100 non-interviewees would be WL'd. How big could this waitlist be?

Good thing I'll be rejected out right, I won't have to worry about such trivialities.

I thought the word on the street was that HBS was so overwhelmed by your app that they were gonna admit you w/o an interview?
