FROM IE Business School - International MBA Blog: Y así nació el ‘IE Marketing Day’

FROM IE Business School - International MBA Blog: FT | IE Corporate Learning Alliance (FT|IE CLA)

The Financial Times and IE Business School announce the launch of the FT | IE Corporate Learning Alliance (FT|IE CLA), a new joint venture providing premium custom learning for business leaders.

The partnership connects the academic excellence of prominent business schools with the FT’s award-winning journalism and insight into real world business challenges.

The FT|IE CLA partners with the world’s leading business schools from Europe, Asia, North and Latin America, to design and deliver tailored programmes that meet the learning needs of today’s executives. Schools partnering for the launch of the CLA include Yale School of Management (United States), Fundação Getulio Vargas (Brazil), Antai Business School (Jiatong University, China), Renmin Business School (China), Singapore Management University, and EGADE (Tec de Monterrey, Mexico), among others. Together they make one of the largest pools of local and international expertise and content. The unique programmes combine face-to-face modules with innovative online and offline learning methods. Programs can be delivered in multiple languages including Arabic, English, Mandarin, Portuguese, and Spanish.

The program includes a measurement framework developed by FT parent company Pearson, that uses the latest research from statisticians and experts in pedagogy to ensure clients’ broader business goals are met.

FT CEO John Ridding said: “The FT|IE CLA combines business insight from the FT’s renowned journalists and columnists with IE’s expertise and academic theory in the classroom. This will give leaders valuable context and a direct link to real time challenges and opportunities.”

Dean of IE Business School Santiago Iñiguez added: “We believe this innovative collaboration will deliver the next era of executive education, combining the FT’s world-class, real time business news and analysis with the very best that business schools have to offer. As corporate customers are demanding more tangible results from their learning programs, we will design and deliver tailored programmes that meet the changing needs of executives, drawing on extensive local and international expertise and content provided by our School and our academic partners.”

The CLA will be led by VanDyck Silveira, who has extensive experience in executive education and corporate development and was previously IE Executive Education CEO. Prior to joining IE Business School and the CLA, Silveira served as CEO and President of Grupo Ibmec, which focused on high-end for‐profit education and ranked among the top universities in Brazil.

FROM IE Business School - International MBA Blog: Michael Gustav Helfenberger: recipient of the Swiss Life Award (formerly Jefferies Award)
By Nathanael Wilson, current student of the International MBA November 2014 Intake.

Last month IE IMBA candidate  Michael Gustav Helfenberger became the most recent recipient of the Swiss Life Award (formerly Jefferies Award). The distinction aims to recognize the most compelling theses from Swiss finance degree candidates studying at the university or graduate level. Michael’s winning 110 page submission draws from his undergraduate studies as well as years of experience in private banking. Last week I had the pleasure of speaking with Michael to learn more about his story and his future after IE Business School.

“In Switzerland we do things different” I heard over and over again as Michael described his path into banking. As an 11 year veteran of the finance industry it seemed Michael must have been much older than he looked. Nope. Michael started the International MBA program with me this November having just turned 27. Doing some quick math I asked if he started working when he was sixteen. “Late 15 actually” he replied, “I started early”.

Michael chose to begin his three-year apprenticeship (common in Switzerland) with UBS because in his words he was “always a money person.” After rotating job roles every six months, his deep familiarity with the business led to an opportunity in the UBS key talent development program. So by age 19 Michael began to focus on international private banking. That’s when the company asked him to move to Panama City and begin his first experience living abroad. Six quick months in Panama, followed by a few more years in Switzerland, and another move to Mexico City all helped Michael develop a broad understanding of cross-cultural international banking – both from a client perspective as well as corporate.

“That’s really where I got the idea for my thesis” explained Michael. It used to be that Swiss banks either had to be onshore – establishing an office in a new locale, investing in operations there, and managing accounts according to local regulations – or entirely off-shore – keeping the bankers, accounts, and operations in Switzerland and traveling to foreign clients for advising as needed. Michael compared these approaches and proposed a third blended approach that takes advantage of local expertise while minimizing the expense of running highly complex operations on foreign soil. Listening to him explain the solution reminded me of IE’s blended format programs that have a similar approach in the field of higher education.

With his work described by the award jury as focusing on “one of the most important regions of the future” there is no question that Michael has already made notable contributions in banking. Now that Michael has joined the IMBA program at IE Business School though he is open to a possible career change. He is currently tossing around some entrepreneurial concepts in gastronomy and keeping a close eye on opportunities in the consumer goods industry. In the meantime we might see Michael on the tennis courts or enjoying a “chupito” with friends between classes. In fact, since he loves international travel as well, I’m hoping Michael will help represent us next summer at the  MBA Tournament in Paris. However his future unfolds, I’m glad to have Michael as a classmate this year at IE and look forward to learning more about his story and so many others here in Madrid.

From all of us at IE, Congratulations Michael! …and best wishes for a fantastic year!

Michael’s winning thesis is titled “Onshore vs. Offshore Private Banking: An analysis for Multinational Swiss Wealth Managers Operating in Latin America, Exemplified by the Mexican Market”. The Swiss Life Award is presented as a collaboration between Swiss Life Asset Managers, industry publication “Finanz und Wirtschaft”, and the Institute for Financial Services Zug (IFZ) of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts. Additional details and an official press release are available from Swiss Life.

FROM IE Business School - International MBA Blog: IE presents IE GASTRONOMY
Last October IE presented “IE GASTRONOMY,” a new initiative focused on “Managament, Nutrition and Welfare” and headed by the President of Spain’s Royal Academy of Gastronomy, Rafael Anson, in collaboration with Banco Popular and the Telefónica Foundation.

IE Gastronomy is aimed at alumni, current students, IE staff and faculty, and collaborating organizations. The key objective of this innovative, creative and healthful initiative is to disseminate and share ideas and experiences in the fields of food and nutrition, the ultimate aim being to bring added value to IE’s academic programs.

The opening remarks of the event were delivered by the Dean of IE Business School and President of IE University, Santiago Iñiguez. Participants in the event included IE President Diego del Alcazar, as well as alumni and directors. Rafael Anson explained that the project is designed to encourage people to eat as well as possible. Anson commented on the importance of trying everything, eating a good range of food but with moderation.  “It is important for people to eat well and live a healthy life that includes exercise or sport, but they should also enjoy their food by combining different elements and trying new dishes.”

In order to achieve its goals, the project is divided into three main areas: educational programs, a gastronomic community, and activities. Programs will comprise 8 modules designed to transmit the importance of health  and nutrition, and will include a module focused on providing a global vision of gastronomy, one on gastronomy and health, one on the impact of gastronomy on the economic and tourism sectors, and another on gastronomy and education.  The online gastronomic community will be chaired by Yolanda Regodón and will offer the latest news on gastronomy, nutrition and well-being, and the latest trends in restaurants, food and drink, and beauty and esthetics. Every aspect of the initiative will help generate content related to the quality of life of members of the community on both a personal and professional level. The aim is to create a networking platform where people can share experiences and users have access to news and enjoy a series of advantages. The community will feature sections on beauty and other additional complementary features.

Rafael Anson was accompanied in the presentation of IE Gastronomy by Gregorio VarelaPresident of the Spanish Foundation for Nutrition, and Chef Mario Sandoval. Gregorio Varela, who is actively involved in the project, stressed the importance of eating healthily. He expanded on many of the points that Rafael Anson had made, and added that nutrition is health plus pleasure, that the intake of calories and knowledge about food, the different food groups, and knowing how to eat are not as widely known as they should be, but that initiatives like this will enable people to avoid health problems and live life more to the full.

Finally chef Mario Sandoval, an expert in handling foodstuffs, wanted to underscore the importance of knowing about the foods that we eat. The main aim should be to eat well while taking in fewer calories.

The project is a concerted effort to enable all those who form part of IE to have the information they need to eat better, cook healthier meals, achieve a better quality of life, and learn to enjoy food to the full.

FROM IE Business School - International MBA Blog: #IEBeingAwesomeToSomebody and #IECares
By Mallory Pierpoint

In an effort to give back to Madrid some of what it has given to us, the IMBA November 2013 Intake, in conjunction with Campus Life and #IECares, has collected donations to create care packages for the homeless around our city. We have received an outpouring of support both through donations and package assembly. We raised 679€!! On Tuesday, December 16th, we handed out the 60 care packages. Please visit our Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1516142158644890/?ref=br_tf

The idea was started after learning about Mark Bustos, a barber in New York City, who spends his spare time supporting the homeless in New York by giving free haircuts and care packages. Mark started the hashtag #BeAwesomeToSomebody, and we wanted to carry it forward with #IEBeingAwesomeToSomebody and #IECares.

We hope that incoming intakes will continue the tradition!

FROM IE Business School - International MBA Blog: Meet the IMBA graduate Daniel Albrecht, currently working at UNILEVER

Daniel Albrecht in alumnus of the International MBA, class of 2013 and currently works for Unilever in the Global Supply Chain Strategies area.

• How did you know about this job opportunity?

In the MBA I completed the International Consulting Project which worked with the Sustainability team within the larger Unilever SC Strategies team. Got to know the team and their work through this project and presented our findings to their VP at the end of the project.

The SC Strategies team then came on campus for hiring and the informational session and the call for applications was publicized and so applied. The UL experience through ICP certainly helped as did my experience in supply chain in emerging markets.

• How did the CMC and your IE experience helped you during the recruiting process?

The CMC brought the SCS team to IE and on campus for applications and interviews so this very much enabled my opportunity with this role. The interviews were on campus and organized through CMC.

Many of the MBA classes were quite useful in this interview process as it was quite technical with mini-cases in Supply Chain & Operations, Finance, and Marketing – so the ability to understand these areas strategically was important. They shortlisted partly on academic grades so that was important as well.

-The ICP project gave me an understanding of how UL worked and the consulting process, as well as an intro to this team and good referrals once we were in the interview/offer process.

• How did the recruiting process was: stages, tests, interviews, etc.?

Call for applications, and then 12 of us were shortlisted for an all-day interview workshop on campus.

A few days in advance we were asked to prepare a 10 minute presentation, 1 minute about yourself and 9 on the most complex and challenging project we worked on in the past 2 years. Presentation was followed by some questions.

A few made it to the final interview round with a Director and Project Lead. Interview was intense! Rapid fire mathematical questions, formulas from classes, and mini-consulting case questions. Thought it was the worst interview I had in my life!

• Would you want to share any tips, advice with current student interested in applying to Unilever?

Get connected to the company however you can to establish ties (conferences, academic projects, alumni) as it can be difficult to enter externally and from other industries.

Know the story that you want to tell the employer. Boil the reasons why they should hire you down to three messages (ensuring they align with the job/company) and make sure everything in your answers comes back to this. Make it unique and memorable.

FROM IE Business School - International MBA Blog: IE’s Women in Business Club’s panel on networking
By Talia C. Harris (IMBA November 2014 intake)

Networking: Why and How to Build Long-lasting Professional Connections

Networking. Some do it as naturally as breathing. Others have accepted it as a dreaded but necessary evil. Some fall somewhere in the middle. Yet everyone seems to agree that networking benefits your professional life. Have you ever stopped to wonder, though, what role your gender plays in your networking endeavors?

Until IE’s Women in Business Club’s panel on networking, I hadn’t.

Lead by moderator Patricía Gabaldon (IE professor), panel guests María Teresa Villanueva, who heads business growth initiatives for women in Latin America, and Patricía Araque, who works with female founders of tech startups, passionately discussed how women in business may network differently than their male counterparts and what these women can do to leverage the power of networks to work for them.

The panel started with Pantene Pro-V ‘s ad which shows the discrepancy between how men and women are labeled in business today (e.g. “Boss” for men verses “Bossy” for women). The message to women was to not let “labels hold you back,” but, as María Teresa related, women who fear being labeled negatively are often not as aggressive at networking and, among other things, are significantly less likely to talk about their career aspirations while networking.

The discussion explored many tricky aspects of women networking in what is often still a “man’s world,” but the important takeaways were straightforward enough:

1) Yes, labels still exist—network anyway.

2) Remember that the quality and size of your network matter.

3) When you network, it is important to have a goal. Short-term networking (who will help me now) and long-term networking (who can help me in the future) are different. It is important to build up your long-term network in advance because building trust takes time.

4) Visibility is key in networking—let others know that you can be useful to them.

The discussion ended with another video, the “Like a Girl” ad by Always, which explores the negative connotation of the phrase “like a girl.” In the end, people were asked to redefine the phrase in a positive way. This is similar to what the motivational women on the panel suggested to us: Redefine how women network. Be bold, proactive, and resourceful. Network like girl!

FROM IE Business School - International MBA Blog: Energy Efficiency Conference
By Tomas Sallies (IMBA November 2014 intake)

Last Thursday at IE Business School, we had the pleasure to receive the visit of Mr. Xavier Rouland, Country Manager for Peninsula Iberica at EDF and CEO of EDF Fenice Iberica. Electricité de France (EDF) is one of the key players in the Electricity Utilities Sector around the world so it was a pleasure to connect the IE students with such a speakers.

During the Conference, Mr. Rouland presented to the audience the main characteristics and current situation of the electricity market, especially within the EU. Throughout his lecture, the CEO of EDF Fenice Iberica gave us a clear and detailed picture of the issues and challenges that the energy companies are confronting.

After the conference, we had a networking cocktail in which the students had the possibility to talk with Mr. Rouland in a more direct way.

FROM IE Business School - International MBA Blog: The Global Network for Advanced Management

IE Business School is a member of The Global Network for Advanced Management. This community fosters substantive ties among the world’s leading business schools from both economically strong countries and those on the horizon of economic development. Importantly, relationships among network members transcend more traditional bi-lateral interactions with proscribed agendas; each network member benefits from the perspective and intellectual contributions of every other and can use the network in creative ways.

The world is more connected than ever before. Twenty-seven business schools are joining forces to understand what this means for businesses and organizations across sectors and to develop global leaders for coming decades.

Today’s global business environment is more tightly connected than ever before. Goods and information travel rapidly across borders. Many organizations, from NGOs to multinational corporations, run operations in more than a hundred countries. Nonetheless, local, national, and regional context still matters. Factors such as the varying roles governments play in the economy, different legal systems, cultural preferences, and approaches to diversity, affect how businesses compete in different terrains.

In order to succeed, enterprises need leaders who understand how markets and organizations work in these increasingly diverse and complex contexts and who can move supplely from a global perspective to specific understanding. Leaders need to be able to call on expertise and resources from all parts of the globe and all sectors of society, and not assume that any one organization or perspective has the final answer. Leaders need to look to the horizon to spot emerging global powers and rapidly developing opportunities at the edges of the economy.

The Global Network for Advanced Management creates an organizational structure that can thrive in this developing environment. It connects each member school with diverse regions, countries, and cultures, and economies in different phases of development. The network facilitates interaction, but leaves the development of an agenda to the participating schools.

The fundamental questions motivating participation in GNAM are:

- What are the new areas of economic power and growth in the global economy?

- What areas of economic power and growth are on the horizon?

- What leadership challenges face enterprises in the future?

- How can top talent from the broad horizons of a flatter global economy be accessed, developed, and connected?

- How can a broad set of business schools work together to address these leadership challenges and enhance leadership development around the globe?
