| FROM IE Business School - International MBA Blog: IMBA students participated in IPEC competition |
In April, a team of IMBA November 2014 Students participated in the final round of IESE Private Equity competition in Barcelona. After an internal selection process a team of 5 IMBA Students: Valerii Gladkyi, Olga Latanova, Andrey Mariyanich, Nicholas Llaneras & Juan Camilo Arana Castaneda traveled to Barcelona to represent IE in the IPEC competition this year. As Valerii said: “The IPEC provided us with an ideal opportunity to leverage our team’s financial skills and get first-handed private equity experience. The competition required our team to act on behalf of PE firm to prepare typical deliverables for an investment committee (DD results, model, investment presentation), all in a real LBO case-study. The workload completely simulated a real-life scenario and required our teams’ full commitment. Our favorite part was during the final stages where we negotiated the commercial terms and managements financing packages with various professionals from CVC Capital Partners, Carlyle Group, and even the target company. Without any doubt, this provided us with the best opportunity to gain industry experience while in an MBA. We enjoyed both the final round challenge and judges recognition for our presented material, all while proudly representing IE!” Congratulations to our IE Students for making it to the final round and for holding the IE flag high! ![]() _______________________ Follow us! | FROM IE Business School - International MBA Blog: Airbus Visits – Getafe Plant |
![]() On 5th of March a group of 30 students from MIM and IMBA went to visit the Airbus plant in Getafe close to Madrid. The group was escorted by two professors of IE, Angel Diaz and Sharada Vindran from the Operations department. Airbus is leading company in the aeronautic sector and produces the aircrafts A320, A330, A350 XWB, A340 and the gigantic A380. Aircrafts are complex products, integrating hundreds of thousands of components. The visit started at 3pm with a general introduction of the company and the complexity of its supply chain. In fact Airbus has many plants across Europe were the components are manufactured and just two final assembly lines (FAL) were the aircrafts are assembled (Toulose and Hamburg). After the introduction the group was escorted by the responsible of the visit, Mr. Angel Gomez to the first facility for the military aircraft conversion. In fact the Getafe Facility is deputed to reconvert civil aircrafts – used for air transport passengers – into military use such as tanker. Tankers are airplanes that can refuel other aircrafts on flight without any stop on the ground. That day there was an A330 (civil setting) under the process of conversion. The group had the opportunity to meet the blue collars and addressing several questions especially regarding the time needed to convert completely the aircraft and all the supply chain of the components. After leaving the military part of the Getafe plant the group visited the facilities where the horizontal tail planes (HTP) for the A380, A350XWB and A320 are assembled. The Getafe plant represents in the aeronautic panorama an excellence since the use of composite material to produce components – such as the HTP- is a common practice. A supplier in Illescas produces the components made from composite materials. Considering the difficulty of the composite material production and its huge quantity needed, a lean approach is used by Airbus which as to assemble all the components in a HTP and the supplier which has to guarantee high quality of the product. The visit lasted two hours and a half and the students were really impressed by the complexity of the supply chain considering all the factors in play. The visit, thankfully with the collaboration of the IE professors, represented a real application of what the IE students – during the Operations and Supply chain courses- are used to studying. ![]() _______________________ Follow us! | FROM IE Business School - International MBA Blog: IE Team recognized as the best non-American team in the Leeds Net Impact Case Competition |
![]() Only top 25 teams between MBA schools around the globe were selected for the semi-final/final round of the Leeds Net Impact Case Competition, that took place in Leeds School of Business in Colorado, USA, and we are happy to announce that IE team was one of them. After a tough competition our team was recognized as the best non-American team in the competition. Congratulations to the team members Alexandra Oborina, Jan-Philipp Gehrmann, Sarit Ventura and Marius Meissner for this amazing result!!! The members of the IE team share their experiences in the competition: Sarit: To start off with a couple of sentences to the NICC competition: The Leeds Net Impact Case Competition (NICC) is the premiere MBA competition focused on solving real world sustainability business cases. NICC attracts top-rated business schools and future industry leaders to solve a case first virtually, providing a narrated ppt presentation within a short time (6 days). In this first round 56 groups have participated. The jury then invited the top 25 to join the semi-finals which took place in Boulder, Colorado. These 25 groups were divided in 5 groups of 5 teams whereof the best teams of each group reached the finals. The IE team which consisted of Alexandra Oborina, Marius Meissner, Jan Philipp Gehrmann and Sarit Ventura (all Global MBA, intake November 2013) ranked second in our group of 5 and thus, nearly missed the finals. However, the IE team was the best non-American team and awarded by the jury for its impressive and thorough presentation skills. The first three ranks were taken by impressive business schools such as Berkley, MIT Sloan and Leeds Business Schools which shows that the level of competition was very high. Overall, we are very happy with our results and would always do it again! Jan-Philipp: All 4 members are from the GMBA core group. By the time we decided to register for the competition each one of us was already 4 months in different modules. This nicely shows the strong bonds we built during our core period and is an advertisement for the Blended squared concept. The preparation for the first round happened completely remote from Munich, Hamburg, Zurich and Niche. We did everything in the evenings live with video conferences. All other teams were doing F2F MBAs and worked on their presentation locally together. It shows that a proper team working remotely together can be just as efficient and successfull. Once we made it to the finals all of us were immediately committed to go to the finals, although it was just 3 weeks before final graduation. I (we) can only recommend to go for such case competitions. The experience you gather locally by meeting new people from all around the world, expanding your network and by presenting your pitch in front of critical judges is great. We all learned a lot. And of course, we also celebrated once the work was done. 3 of us extended the stay by 1,5 days and went to the rockys where we tested our skiing skills on the vail slopes. Another unforgettable experience (Sarit, do you have a nice group foto on that as well). And last but not least thanks to the IE who supported us on this trip. ______________________ Follow us! | FROM IE Business School - International MBA Blog: The LEGO Challenge |
By Talia C. Harris (IMBA student) “Everything is AWESOME!” was the mantra as the final Challenge Week at IE Business School went out with a bang—a LEGO bang!!! For years, IMBA students at IE have collaborated with different companies on weeklong challenge that takes place between both first and second term and then again between second and third term. Students in teams of seven focus on an innovation-based challenge set by the company. Afterwards the company uses the data produced by the IE IMBA think tank to further their business ventures. In the past, the school has worked with such big name companies such as IKEA—now they can also add LEGO to their dossier. On Monday, students gathered at the historical Cines Callo in central Madrid to receive a briefing from two LEGO Senior Managers of Operating Development. At the end of the briefing, LEGO posed their challenge: “How might LEGO combine new and existing channels to create a user experience as iconic and engaging as their products?” Over the course of the week, over 50 teams put together their brains to complete this challenge. Special guest lecturers walked the teams through the entrepreneurial process of design thinking, coaching teams to push the limits of their creative energies. At the end of a week of research, interviewing users, and testing prototypes, the teams came together to pitch their ideas at the fair. Different ideas included everything from creating touring LEGO buses that took the LEGO experience on the road to consumers outside of traditional promotional areas to ideas of promoting LEGO car racing events. The winning team focused on using a LEGO cloud coupled with point-of-sale parts inventorying services to create an enhanced experience for LEGO users, purchasers, and retailers. ![]() The winning team: Jorge Todd, Juan Pablo Lacayo, Peter Rutsch, Chashah Nicholas, Abdul Latif Al-Khaled, Melannie Pitoscia, & Uzair Qadar. ______________________ Follow us! | FROM IE Business School - International MBA Blog: Arantza de Areilza, Dean of Humanities at IE, interviews Gordon Brown, Former PM of the United Kingdom at the Management and Business Summit 2015 |
On June 17th Dr. Arantza de Areilza, Dean of Humanities at IE, interviewed Former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and current United Nations Special Envoy for Global Education, Gordon Brown, at the Management & Business Summit (MABS) organized by Atresmedia. From the uncertain future of the UK in the EU and the Union itself to the goal of achieving quality, relevance, and inclusive education for every child, Gordon Brow ![]() n focused his intervention on the current and future global challenges. “We live in an interdependent world. For example, the fear of ‘Grexit’ and the demands for debt reduction in Greece have implications all over Europe. As Europe we need to think more globally”, Mr. Brown said. During his interview with Dr. de Areilza, Mr. Brown highlighted in his speech that the world is experiencing seismic changes, or revolutions, as he named them. As a case in point, in the run up to the 2000s financial crisis the world economic center was located in the West, but in the last decade we have witnessed a shift to the emerging markets in Asia, Latin America, and Africa. ![]() Another revolution that will have a huge impact on the future is the rise of a new global middle class, particularly in Asia and Africa. As Mr. Brown pointed out, the global middle class would expand from around 20 percent of world’s population now to approximately 50 percent in 2030. This means that only those companies who adapt quickly to these changes will survive. As the UN Special Envoy for Global Education, Gordon Brown also discussed the need to tackle major inequalities among education systems worldwide. “To this end we need a revolution in the way we educate our children and more investment on education”, Mr. Brown argued. “We can at least become the first generation in History where every child has the right to go to school”. For all these challenges, though, “the world ahead is a world of opportunities in which the most innovative people, companies, and countries will have a clear advantage and will be more likely to succeed”, Mr. Brown concluded. _________________________________ Follow us!
