Hi,
This is the first time I will be applying to ISB.
Could anyone help me understand how to identify the perfect recommendor and how to approach this aspect of the essay. WIll the recommender be asked to fill a questionnaire or will he have to write anything about the applicant?
Thanks!
How to identify the recommender:
1. ISB needs only one recommender, so select wisely
2. All b-schools ask for professional recommendations. So this filters out any academic recommender or one from your social engagements such as volunteering.
If there is only one recommendation needed, I strongly suggest it should be professional. FOR ALL BUSINESS SCHOOLS.3. Typically b-schools ask for a current or previous supervisor to recommend you. WHY? Because these people know your profile best if they have supervised your work for at least 6 months.
4. Look at the recommendation questions. B-schools ask recommenders to talk about your strengths, weakness and compare you with peers. Only a manager who has intimate knowledge of your working style and knows your achievements can comment on these with enthusiasm and understanding.
5. That brings me to the next point- don't go merely by designations while selecting recommenders. An immediate manager who has double the enthusiasm in writing your recommendation will make a far stronger case in your favour than the company's CEO who is hard-pressed for time and writes insipid, 4 line answers.
6. Moreover, while working with applicants,
I like to use recommendation more strategically, by getting recommenders to address those achievements and qualities which could not be mentioned through the essays. So the recommendation can become your strategic tool to show more of your awesomeness that could not be covered in the essays.
7. Now with all this said, don't put your career in jeopardy by asking your current manager for a reco if you think he will not support your MBA plans. Think a little long term. There's a possibility you may land up not getting accepted at your target program. In that case, you may still need to work with the same organization. Your supervisors should not hold your MBA plans against you and thus sideline you from any important responsibilities in the future.
8. SO assess how your supervisor will react to your MBA plans and then make your request for a recommendation. If it does not look very positive, ask a mentor, a previous supervisor, another senior with who you have worked on some projects or a client.
9. Lastly, try getting a recommender with who you have worked with in the past 3 years. You are probably your best version on the current day, so recency matters. For this reason you want someone to endorse your most recent experiences.
10. Also, ISB has an option for an alum/ current student recommendation. Utilize that.
