Will be reapplying this year! Got dinged with a 316 on GRE (Q160 V156) but going to improve that.

Let's go!

Edit: Wanted some insight on who people will be asking for a recommendation? Since ISB allows only one recommender, I'm wondering if I should go with a client I worked with for a period of 5 months (Ross alum, VP expansion at a Y-combinator startup) or a former manager under whom I worked for close to 2 years?

Hi kloppismydad
If you have worked with the manager recently, I would go for him/her, specially considering the fact that you worked for 2 years together. It ultimately depends on your rapport with the the recommender and his/her ability to write you a good recommendation in my opinion.

Choose the person with whom you've closely worked and who knows you well as a professional. In order of priority, this trumps her credentials. Ideally, the quality / trait you highlight in the first essay should be complemented in your recommendation.
All the best for this year!

Hi,

This is the first time I will be applying to ISB.

Could anyone help me understand how to identify the perfect recommendor and how to approach this aspect of the essay. WIll the recommender be asked to fill a questionnaire or will he have to write anything about the applicant?

Thanks!

kloppismydad, while perhaps it matters the most that how long the applicant has/had worked with the recommender, there are other important aspects to consider while selecting the referees. In my opinion, the trust level between the recommender and the applicant matters a lot. For instance, between a client with whom the applicant has worked for just few months but who is willing to take out time to hear out the application strategy and then accordingly write a recommendation that is both well expressed and covers the aspects of the applicant that have been highlighted in the essays and a manager with whom the applicant has worked for a few years but who is not in a position to submit a thought-out and a glowing recommendation, the choice is not an easy one.

Hi,

This is the first time I will be applying to ISB.

Could anyone help me understand how to identify the perfect recommendor and how to approach this aspect of the essay. WIll the recommender be asked to fill a questionnaire or will he have to write anything about the applicant?

Thanks!

How to identify the recommender:

1. ISB needs only one recommender, so select wisely
2. All b-schools ask for professional recommendations. So this filters out any academic recommender or one from your social engagements such as volunteering. If there is only one recommendation needed, I strongly suggest it should be professional. FOR ALL BUSINESS SCHOOLS.
3. Typically b-schools ask for a current or previous supervisor to recommend you. WHY? Because these people know your profile best if they have supervised your work for at least 6 months.
4. Look at the recommendation questions. B-schools ask recommenders to talk about your strengths, weakness and compare you with peers. Only a manager who has intimate knowledge of your working style and knows your achievements can comment on these with enthusiasm and understanding.
5. That brings me to the next point- don't go merely by designations while selecting recommenders. An immediate manager who has double the enthusiasm in writing your recommendation will make a far stronger case in your favour than the company's CEO who is hard-pressed for time and writes insipid, 4 line answers.
6. Moreover, while working with applicants, I like to use recommendation more strategically, by getting recommenders to address those achievements and qualities which could not be mentioned through the essays. So the recommendation can become your strategic tool to show more of your awesomeness that could not be covered in the essays.
7. Now with all this said, don't put your career in jeopardy by asking your current manager for a reco if you think he will not support your MBA plans. Think a little long term. There's a possibility you may land up not getting accepted at your target program. In that case, you may still need to work with the same organization. Your supervisors should not hold your MBA plans against you and thus sideline you from any important responsibilities in the future.
8. SO assess how your supervisor will react to your MBA plans and then make your request for a recommendation. If it does not look very positive, ask a mentor, a previous supervisor, another senior with who you have worked on some projects or a client.
9. Lastly, try getting a recommender with who you have worked with in the past 3 years. You are probably your best version on the current day, so recency matters. For this reason you want someone to endorse your most recent experiences.
10. Also, ISB has an option for an alum/ current student recommendation. Utilize that.

Guys, I can't find my University in the list provided in the ISB application form, has anyone else had the same issue?
There is no option to select "others" and enter the name manually.

Need advice.
I did my graduation from IGNOU which completed in 2016. I have a provisional certificate and a marksheet. Can I apply using these two documents?
IGNOU has been shut since March 2020 and even after opening will mostly take 2-3 months to issue the original degree.

dushyantkanal, my guess is that for the purpose of submitting the application the provisional certificate and mark-sheet will be enough, however, when in such doubts, it's best to ask the admissions team over an e-mail or phone call for clarification and assistance so that there is no doubt in the mind.

Totally agree with iamsiddharthkapoor on this. These questions are best addressed to the adcom to avoid ambiguities
