Hi Everyone, Im just about wrapping up 2 years (24 months full time, 27 months over all) at my first job at a startup. Ive been one of the early employees handling marketing, HR and Operations. Im taking a break now to focus on Master prep specifically for ISB due to its global ranking - does my profile even stand a chance due to the lack of higher experience?

"Break" as in an academic break to be able to study for GMAT properly

UG is: BMM Animation and Multimedia (From Loyola College, ranked 8th in NIRF for 2024) - 80% score
12th (PCMC - CBSE): 85%
10th (CBSE) - 89.6%

I agree with the others. Taking a break for application or GMAT/GRE prep ( if thats what you meant) is not looked upon favorably by the adcoms. And why? Because they are looking for all-rounders who can multitask and handle all kinds of challenges simultaneously. If you are well aware that you are relatively on the lower side of the work spectrum for ISB, why would you further draw attention to your inability to stand up to challenges by taking a study break? The younger you are, the more critically the adcom will look at your actions and decisions. Any sign of unpreparedness for the tough corporate life and you lose your edge in the application process.

Hi,

Startup experience is definitely valuable as it usually gives you the opportunity to delve into multiple areas of a business minus any hierarchical constraints. Unless it is very difficult to study for the GMAT along side your job, try not to take a break. However, if its absolutely imperative for you to do so, then make good use of the time that you have at hand when you are not preparing for the GMAT. Focus on building new skills or getting diverse experiences that would prepare you as a strong applicant for the MBA program.

There are more missing pieces here - what has your career journey been like? What roles and responsibilities have you handled? Undergrad grades? Any extracurriculars? Everything is important.

To decide whether your profile stands a chance given your less experience answer the following questions:
1. What is the depth of work experience you have gained at the startup?
2. Do you have strong leadership experiences to talk about in your ISB application?
3. Have you considered alternatives like postponing your application by a year to gain more experience, especially in a leadership role?
4. What specific impact have you made at your startup that you can quantify?
5. Do you have any unique skills or perspectives that differentiate you from other applicants?

All the best!

A score of no less than 645+ will be ideal to try ISB. But other admission components-essays, academics, resume and letter of recommendations- matter too.
