Profile Evaluation for ISB

Hello everyone. I’m(30M) going to reapply to ISB this year in R1. Last time I applied was in 2021 R1. Got an interview call, but wasn’t selected.

My acads are as follows:

10th: 84% ICSE,
12th: 90% ISC,
B.Com(Honors): 68% Calcutta University,
CA Intermediate cleared,
GMAT Focus score: 735(100 percentile), Going to appear for CAT this year.

Extracurriculars:

Participated in Quiz and Skit competitions in school, organizer of events in school fest, Participated in various international essay competitions, Writes a blog on economics, philosophy, and technology, and Initiated and Organized Internal and External training Webinars at one of my work experience companies.

Work Experience (5 years with 2.5 years of gaps):

Worked at 5 different startups in B2B Saas, e-commerce,and Edtech domains, in multiple functions: operations, product management, and analytics. Reached the level of an Assistant/Associate Manager in these functions and have made a considerable impact.

As you can see, the EC isn’t really extraordinary. Also, there are multiple switches and gaps in my work experience - mostly because of lack of clarity and also because I didn’t want to be pigeonholed in a function that I didn’t consider long term for myself. Also in the 4 years since reapplying, I’ve had a total gap of around 2 years and switched twice.

Wanted to know my chances of admission in ISB.

Any help or opinions appreciated.
Hi,
Ideally you want only focus on your work narrative and gaps when thinking about what went wrong. Extracurriculars are not the main reason. Given that the gaps would be less prominent over a longer period you should be ok. However be candid and showcase your work highlighting the diversity of skills/insights you have gained. Get a recommendation from an isb alum through the isb referral link. Visit the school. Goals have to be very well thought out. I feel an honest reflection of your career journey will guide you to the right narrative. Regards, Neha Iyengar ISB08, MBA Head, Oncourse

I am hoping ISB is not the only school you are applying you.

As you have witnessed last year, one can never be 100% sure of the chances and so, it is always a good idea to hedge the risk.

Good luck.

It would do you absolutely no good, unless you have closely worked with that alum and that alum can vouch for you.

You might find the following article useful: Letter of Recommendation (LoR) in ISB application

Hey
My Manager is alimuni of ISB. Does that make sense if I ask him to get LOR from him?

If he/she has direct visibility into your work and if you are confident that he/she would give you a good recommendation, absolutely go ahead MANSImahara221.

Also, please ask him/her to mention in the LoR that he/she is an ISB alum (along with class of graduation), else ISB would (obviously) not know about this.

If you've worked closely with him then absolutely..
First bit is, they should be able to demonstrate the closeness and longevity of the working relationship in the first question..
Then, more senior the better..isb alum is a good to have there

There are multiple views on this. I have worked with candidates where it has made a difference. However I feel having one good consultant guide you through the process is imperative. Many strategies work but they should be applied in their entirety. Free advise is usually generic and can help upto a certain level.

Among other things, please make sure that you write to ISB, asking for a feedback on your last year's rejection.

I don’t nsee any reason for you to spend any time and energy on CAT... I think you are a pretty decent candidate for ISB and students like you (with your background) convert with a 100% rate at ISB with a decent help with application and Interview prep.

I see almost certainty that you should convert ISB or IIM A, B C executive program. Let me know if you need help!

What are some good colleges in India offering a 1 year MBA, apart from ISB and IIM-A, for someone with around 4 years of work experience?

Hi pranjalshah,

You could look at applying to SP Jain and IIM K (PGP-BL).

All the best!

Hi pcpc,

You do have a stellar GMAT score, but the gap and career switches will raise multiple questions.

Your best bet is to frankly explain the shifts, talk about how you progressed through these, and what you truly learnt.

You should definitely apply to ISB but do have a back up in place because this could go either way.

All the best!
