Re: Calling all Kellogg Fall'08 applicants [#permalink]
I had my interview on Saturday 02/02. Just thought I would post a little debrief.

So the interviewer was scheduled for Caribou coffee. I showed up 30 minutes before just to make myself comfortable and have a coffee. He was a couple of minutes late as he had flown in to Chicago that morning itself (tons of cancellation the night before coz of weather). He did not get a chance to print the resume so my two copies came in handy (definitely take two copies). He set a very nice vibe for the interview and was extremely friendly. It was a very conversational and laid back interview. He hardly asked any questions. I think the main thing that he wanted to really know is "Why Kellogg?". I guess having a good justification to that question is extremely important. I spoke about the clubs, courses, professors, and a couple of alumni. He mentioned that he was happy to see that I had done my research. So go on the website and know it really well for your intended concentration. That'd be my advice for people. The interview lasted about 45 minutes. All in all, I got a positive feel and enjoyed it.

Re: Calling all Kellogg Fall'08 applicants [#permalink]
Its too late for this advice for essays but I did tell everyone I helped this...and it definitely is true for interviews. At Kellogg you will have more than one "Major." Almost everyone I talked to had or has 3, some had 2 and some had 4 but everyone had at least two. Dont just say I want to do finance because of XXX. Even during the event I attended the adcom made a point about talking about multiple majors providing a well rounded background. She had the alums there actually talk about what they majored in and why they choose those combinations.

Marketing was extremely common, even people working in banking and consulting seemed to have done the marketing major. The same reason was that its incredibly valuable to understand marketing no matter what you do. Same with finance or management...each will make you more well rounded and pretty much no matter what you do they will be valuable in your future career.

So if they ask what you want to major/concentrate in while at Kellogg talk about the obvious ones for your career goal. For example I want GM so I talked about strategic management. But dont forget another one or two that will round out your profile...tie them together and show how they will work together to make you more desirable to employers than someone who strictly did finance or management.

Re: Calling all Kellogg Fall'08 applicants [#permalink]
Hi, I have a few questions that I hope the group can give me some suggestions on....

I'm an international student and I submitted my Kellogg app for R2. When I submitted Part 1, I was scheduled to rewrite my GMAT so I didn't include my GMAT score in the app (just put in the date that I was going to write it). I had the GMAT report sent to Kellogg but I want to ensure that they use the score from my rewrite when they consider my application because it was much better. I couldn't add my second score to Part 1 after I submitted it. Should I contact admissions to make it clear that they should use the rewrite score?

Also, since I'm international my undergrad didn't use a GPA system but the application wouldn't let me leave the GPA field blank in the form so I looked up a GPA converter online and converted my percentage to a GPA and inserted that number. However, there seems to be lots of different GPA calculators out there so I'm not sure how accurate this number is. Do you think I should also let admissions know that the GPA I reported was self-calculated?

Thanks for your advice!

yes let ad-com know. They are used to all sorts of grading systems. When i asked them, they told me to put 0.00 in the grade fields and they can determine the GPA from teh transcripts.

Re: Calling all Kellogg Fall'08 applicants [#permalink]
Hey folks, couple questions:

1) My interview was first waived, then i was called for a phone interview. I supposed that's a good sign? Is it as good as getting interviews at other schools, or does Kellogg pretty much phone interviews most people (who were waived) anyway?

2) Any particular tips for phone interviews? I have done well with in person interviews..but never done a phone one. Does Kellogg ask hard questions or pretty much the standard?

Thanks.

Ace, 1) yes its a very good sign. If you are waived and dont get a phone interview it means you are getting dinged...it means they like your application enough to put the effort into calling you. 2) Kellogg's interviews are pretty standard, nothing too unusual gets asked unless you have some really unusual things in your profile. I believe there are interview questions put up somewhere on this thread if you look through some of the previous pages.

Re: Calling all Kellogg Fall'08 applicants [#permalink]
Thanks River, as always helpful with the Kellogg info. Hopefully I will do well on the phone.

One point of concern, as I understand, Kellogg waives a lot of internationals for interviews. I am wondering if its because they are lacking in international presence? (ie not enough alums overseas to conduct interviews) I would like to work internationally after MBA, possibly Asia, and I am a bit concerned about that. Do you have any insights?

Re: Calling all Kellogg Fall'08 applicants [#permalink]
I think you need to realize that a lot of the people who are waived arent in major cities and even if there are alums there, only a small percent actually do interviews. If you are hoping to go into a major city then it wont be as much of an issue...especially with the global economy, you very well could be hired by a major US company to work in an overseas office and they will know very well who Kellogg is. Pretty much all of the UEs and many Es will help you overseas. If a company is recruiting MBAs they probably have a good idea where schools stand in reputation.
