I certainly appreciate the fact that Kellogg allows updates and even allows people to get direct feedback from a WL manager. Believe me I don't take it for granted. But to give absolutely no words about the result is simply beyond imagination.

At least tell people "150 of you are competing for 15 spots in three weeks", or "you are on a reduced list now and we'll get back to you in mid-July", don't just give a timeline (a specific date of May 11th, for that matter) and say nothing for a week after you missed it.

If I miss a deadline at work, I send an update immediately explaining the situation, and set new expectations (e.g. "although we are behind, we expect to finish the project in a month"). Hiding from people is never a good thing to do.

Unfortunately, admissions people have the luxury of being a black box. I personally believe it is a ridiculous process, in general.

When I spoke to my WL manager earlier this week he was clear. They have not sent status updates for people who have been dinged, so some folks do not know their statuses. Rest of the folks who are still waiting have to wait for the round 3 decisions. He mentioned that they sent the offers last week and have to wait for few more weeks until they realize what the real yield is. At that point he said, they will admit some and ding others and offer few to stay on summer waitlist. Realistically I do not see more than 2-3 folks getting offers from summer waitlist. Summer meltdown is really folks who have received a tremendous promotion or family emergency or chose to defer the admission to apply again.

Correct - they won't know what their real yield is until June 6th, which is the deposit deadline.

Either way, I think the point has been that May 11th was not an actual a decision date, as they specified in the FAQs, so they should have been more clear on that to those on the WL.

Pramodpg - can you clarify? Are you saying that some of us on the WL have already been dinged, but our status has not been updated yet? I believe there were a few people on the 11th and/or 12th who had their status changed to deny (although they didn't receive an email first). I'm wondering why they would ding some waitlisters on that day, but not all.

The first thing he asked was whether I have checked my status before calling him. This was on Tuesday, May 17. He said they are running behind on the May11 deadline to update the statuses. Their preference is always to call people who are admitted first and then "take care" of the dings later. Ideally by May 11 they should know the fate of the round 2 applicants. They should admit whom they can and ding the rest. Offer some for summer waitlist. They are really hedging their own yield rate by having more people on the waitlist. For a college which has such low yield rate among the top 5 schools, this must be pretty normal.

I am sure that they cannot predict or know about someone, who got an offer and will not join Kellogg because they are already got an offer from somewhere else.

Do u know how they gonna deal with it? because i am sure someone still take their seats because they already paid 2000$ deposit and do not join because they got a seat from somewhere else, ex MIT, Wharton, etc

Adcom will not know until the school start!!!

I think most people go into the waitlist knowing that they might have to forfeit a deposit elsewhere. Honestly, I don't think that is a factor $2,000 out of $160,000 (1.25%) is not a huge opportunity cost in the scheme of things.

I'm going to contact my WL manager today, and she has been very helpful and responsive. I will post any useful info.

I spoke with my WL manager earlier today and received the following response (roughly):

"Where we are now in the process is seeing how the class is rounding out. We did release some decisions on the May 11th deadline, and are just seeing how the class is looking. We plan on releasing more decisions in the next week. If you still do not hear anything in the next week you will most likely be contacted and asked if you want to join the summer WL; however, at this time we have not yet reached our decision for summer WL candidates."

Bottom line: Next week should have more decisions coming in. They probably gave their WL admits only a few days to decide (similar to Duke), and spots will open up if they choose to decline. My guess is more dings will come next week too.

Nice work. I hope it's true. They told me something similar last week...

WL admits were given until June 6 to submit a deposit, so roughly 3.5 weeks to decide.

Per the email of my WL Manager

We are at a full class right now and waiting to hear decisions from the students extended offers in Round 3 (they have until June 6th) and once we see how much space we have in the class, we will make decisions about candidates off the waitlist to fill the class. At this point, we consider candidates on the waitlist to be a part of the summer waitlist and will utilize that list to fill spaces on a one-off basis as they become open.

Soooooooo...... different waitlist managers are saying completely contradictory things? As if this process couldn't be any more ambiguous and unclear.
