Is it okay to choose a different region all together?

you can choose closest available region.. Schools usually allot interviewers randomly right - any reason behind allotting someone from my city?

I think it is better to wait for 2-3 days after you send out your first email, and then follow-up

Choosing US means it would be US citizens who are students is it?

Yes you can choose closest available region. They do say it is randomly allotted, but I am not sure. I selected Singapore and I got an alumni who is currently staying in Singapore

same for Hyderabad, India.. is this a common practice

Picking a zone essentially means, you will get an alumni or student who is also in the same timezone. This is done so you can easily find a suitable time for the interview
