i mean most people want to leave IB after 1-2 years anyway so unless you’re looking to be a career banker you’re likely fine? also, if you went to a good program i am sure you can go to another bank if you get laid off.
You can’t leave IB as a post MBA associate in one year. You’re cooked if you do. You need to last three years or else they’re not gonna trust your skills. If they see a one year blip you’re **** because everyone on the street knows that you couldn’t last. The way it works Is they give you one year to ramp but after that if you don’t ramp up they will let you know that you will be pushed out and they’ll give you 6 months to find a new job.

If you get laid off as a post MBA associate you’re **** especially if it’s under a year. You’ll have no relevant experience. The best thing you can do in that scenario is just tell people that you realized the job wasn’t for you. Unfortunately, I’ve seen it happen far too many times in many don’t recover at all. My buddy is currently going through it. He got fired recently.

U can’t get your bonus after a year. It’s stub and vested dude. They don’t pay the whole thing out.

They don’t pay u the whole bonus at once as an associate. The analyst they do. They do that because they don’t want you to leave right away.

It’s understandable many in these chats have never worked in investment banking.

They get their information from WSO and college kids in the same boat as them.

In 2022 sure you can bounce back. I’ve seen it happen, a kid got fired after 5 months and ended up in LMM or, but now it’s very hard. MBA IB careers are very very market volatile. For example, when the market is ripping, A2A is low and Associate roles are needed. You likely won’t get fired in that market. However, now those same poor performers are more likely to get fired. It’s all part of the cycle. As of today, if you get canned, it’s gonna be a lot tougher to bounce back. If you’ve been in the industry for three years, you could probably lateral to a VP because there’s a shortage of good associate vice president in the US

ideally would be aiming for banking in charlotte or atlanta. but would also aim for NYC obviously
That’s a smart play to be honest with you. If you can do it in the southeast you’re winning

The market is definitely tough
Pivoting into completely different industries especially with no prior experience is over in my opinion

Agreed with this. The lateral market for associate 1s is dead right now and won’t be active until march. I just can’t see them wanting to take on someone with no experience in finance given the conditions right now it’s just really bad. They’re literally looking for excuses to fire people at the moment.

consulting still takes folks from all backgrounds (although more business relevant the better)
