The interview lasts around 20 minutes and includes a mix of behavioral, program-specific, motivation-based, and technical questions. Here’s a brief overview of what you can expect:

  • Why MSc in Finance and why this school? Be prepared to clearly articulate your short- and long-term goals, and how the program fits into your broader career path.
  • Walk me through your CV / background. Structure your answer well—highlight experiences relevant to finance, especially internships or academic projects.
  • Tell me about a time you worked in a team / faced a challenge. These behavioral questions are designed to assess your interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Any recent financial news that caught your attention? Stay updated with current events in global markets—choose a topic you’re genuinely interested in and explain its implications.
  • Technical questions. Depending on your background, you may be asked about:

    • Valuation methods (e.g., DCF, comparables, precedents)
    • How the three financial statements are linked
    • Financial ratios and what they indicate
    • Basic concepts in capital markets or corporate finance
    • Occasionally, questions on interest rates, inflation, or brain teasers to test logical thinking

The tone of the interview is professional but conversational. They’re mainly assessing your clarity, motivation, and understanding of core finance concepts.

If you’d like, Admit Scholar can help you prepare with a tailored mock interview that includes both technical and behavioral questions, along with personalized feedback. We can also connect you with recent admits, share sample questions, and guide you in refining your answers to match your goals. Would you like us to set that up for you?

How is the SMU MBA program compared to NUS?
When comparing the Singapore Management University (SMU) MBA and the National University of Singapore (NUS) MBA, it’s important to look beyond rankings and adopt a well-rounded view that considers program design, reputation, student profile, industry connections, and fit with post-MBA goals. Both are leading programs in Asia, but they serve different kinds of applicants and career trajectories. In terms of global reputation and rankings, NUS enjoys a clear edge. It is consistently ranked among the top global MBA programs by the Financial Times and QS, and its brand name carries strong recognition not only in Asia but also in Europe and the U.S. SMU, while younger and ranked lower globally, is well respected in Singapore and Southeast Asia. It is known for its close ties to the local business ecosystem, especially in finance and consulting.

The curriculum and structure of the two programs also differ significantly. NUS is more academically rigorous and offers a 17-month full-time MBA that can be completed in 12 months(compromising on other aspects of the programme). It provides a wider range of electives, specializations, and global exchange options with many partner schools. SMU’s MBA, on the other hand, is a 15-month full-time program (with the flexibility to complete within 10 months), focused on leadership, communication, and practical business skills. It’s well suited for professionals who prefer applied learning and an intensive, compact format.

In terms of industry exposure and alumni networks, NUS has a larger, more globally dispersed alumni base. SMU’s network is highly engaged locally. The program has good relationships with Singapore-based firms and regional employers, making it ideal for those seeking to build or continue a career within Southeast Asia.

In terms of admissions competitiveness, NUS is more selective. The program is ideal for those seeking to pivot into consulting, tech, or international business roles. SMU can be slightly less competitive but still selective. Ideal applicants are mid-career professionals with clear regional goals and strong industry experience, especially in finance, technology, or entrepreneurship.

Consider networking with the alumni and check for latest employment reports to gain more insights. Ultimately, the right choice depends on your career goals, experience level, and preferred post-MBA geography. If you'd like a detailed profile evaluation, feel free to reach out. Good luck!

Hey everyone!
I’ve recently accepted my offer to join SMU this August intake — I’ll be doing the MBA program, but I’d really love to connect with anyone joining SMU,NUS or any other clg, whether you're in business, analytics, law, comms, or any other course .

I’m super excited about moving to Singapore — and I’m looking to build some solid friendships from day one. Would love to meet like-minded people to explore the city, hang out, travel on weekends, and just have a fun, memorable time during our studies.

If you’re heading to Singapore this August (2025 intake), feel free to drop a comment or DM — maybe we can even start a small group to stay in touch
